Reminds me of how immigration attorneys are now writing “confidential address” in humanitarian visa applications, not to protect the client from their abuser but from the federal govt
To be clear:

LA County has declared a state of emergency BECAUSE OF the federal government.

The Feds, LA County is (correctly) saying, have CAUSED the emergency.

This is a striking political moment of internal collapse. Local govts feeling compelled to protect their ppl from … their own govt.

super valuable breakdown of how ICE has built a propaganda arm and what goes into it:
The Border Patrol El Centro Sector employs five dedicated agents to make what are essentially ICE “fancams” for social media. But they’re not editing in CapCut like most people on TikTok 😳

Reporter @marinamasako.bsky.social shares five key takeaways from watching their social media videos.

🚨NEW: Erez Reuveni, the DOJ lawyer fired for his honesty in the Kilmar Abrego Garcia case, sends Congress a whistleblower letter detailing lawlessness at the DOJ around the CECOT deportations.

He says Emil Bove told the DOJ to respond to likely court orders blocking flights with "fuck you."

Sotomayor: "The implication of the Government’s position is that not only noncitizens but also United States citizens could be taken off the streets, forced onto planes, and confined to foreign prisons with no opportunity for redress if judicial review is denied unlawfully before removal"
#BREAKING: 5-4 Court, with Barrett joining the three Dem. appointees in dissent *vacates* Chief Judge Boasberg’s temporary restraining orders in the Alien Enemy Act cases. Judicial review must be available, Court holds, but has to come through habeas petitions:

In more uplifting news, 1,000 people protested ICE’s abduction of a mother and children at the home of the agency’s acting head Tom Homan.

Notably, the entire population of the town is just 1,450.

We gotta find better ways to describe these arrests, man. "Detained" ain't cutting it. Getting your car window busted out and getting dragged away isn't "detained." Getting stopped on the street and disappeared for writing an OpEd isn't getting "detained." The language needs to match the action here

Had missed this story in the Miami Herald about a man that already been granted refugee status being removed under the Alien Enemies Act declaration to CECOT. The other identified removals I'd heard of were undocumented or asylum seekers, first I'm hearing of approved refugees being targeted
Despite refugee status in the U.S., young Venezuelan was deported to Salvadoran prison
E.M. and his girlfriend fled persecution in their native Venezuela in 2021 and dreamed of making a new life in the United States.

This is absolutely catastrophic and an enormous betrayal.

Undocumented folks have been promised that this info-sharing b/w IRS and DHS wouldn’t occur so that they would pay taxes to a state that offers them nothing in return.

Now they will be rewarded with deportation.

Seeing what Timothy Snyder wrote about back in 2017 play out in real time today with Trump declaring an “invasion” at the border, which he is using to find a state of “exception” or “emergency” allowing ICE to invoke the #AlienEnemiesAct to arrest whoever they deem is a terrorist or criminal

Wow! These are conditions that in the past decade we have seen inside border patrol detention facilities. But with the administration ramping up arrests, and ratcheting down releases, this level of overcrowding is becoming more common in the interior. These conditions are completely illegal.
A man slated for deportation has captured conditions inside the Krome Detention Center in Florida. He says some people have been confined like this for up to 30 days.

At least three men have died at Krome in the past five months.

This. Folks who are rightfully angry at current immigration policy and suppression of free speech need to listen to what activists have been arguing about criminalization & policing (even the "war on terror) have been arguing for decades, and most recently, since Summer 2020
There is no way to fight back that doesn’t challenge ideas like ‘terrorist,’ ‘gang member,’ and ‘criminal.’
