"A Free Press is as essential to a democracy as State Controlled Media is essential to a dictator. President Trump has been raging against our free press since before he became president, and has continued to rage until this day." -- by @hgrit70.bsky.social

We at The Steady State have studied the indicators of authoritarianism for decades — usually dry words in intelligence reports. But sometimes, a single photograph says it all.

Authoritarianism doesn’t arrive all at once. It creeps in under cover of “order,” cloaked in uniforms, justified by fear.

Excellent. Steven Cash states it perfectly: we are slouching towards authoritarianism.

"But what's so scary is, what's happening here is what my organization and what intelligence officers and diplomats have seen overseas, which is a democracy sliding into an autocracy."

The quote from Faber is something that Trump & Co. could never post.

“Knowledge is Good.” — Emil Faber

Democracy depends on facts -- the Congressional Research Service is a treasure — nonpartisan, deeply researched analysis to Congress (and, to the rest of us).

It’s free. It’s factual. A reminder that knowledge still is good.

Translation: If the governor or courts don’t cooperate, we’ll do whatever we want—authoritarianism in plain English.

Q: Are you planning to invoke the Insurrection Act?

TRUMP: Well, it's been invoked before. If you look at Chicago -- Chicago is a great city where's a lot of crime and if the governor can't do the job, we'll do that job.

Only by acting promptly can Congress bring our nation into compliance with the Constitution and international law, reduce the risk of hostilities with neighboring countries and assure that similar abuses of Presidential power do not expand to American shores. bit.ly/3KVqX84

A great article from Bill Piekney: There is something wrong with the man in the White House—and everyone around him knows it. What we’re watching are the reflexes of a disordered mind, filling silence with nonsense while dragging the nation toward militarized rule.

OPB reported that, in court filings opposing the Guard deployment, police noted the night before Trump’s post that the ICE facility protest had “8–15 people at any given time,” mostly “sitting in lawn chairs and walking around,” with “energy…low, minimal activity.”

Inspectors General provide important oversight and investigate fraud, waste, and abuse. Democracies need oversight to prevent abuses in power. Removing the watchdogs is one more aspect of authoritarianism.
Trump administration moves to defund inspector general watchdog group
The decision marks the latest example of the administration’s push to limit government oversight activities.

$18B in NYC infrastructure frozen—not because the tunnel or subway aren’t needed, but because shutdown politics paused DEI reviews. Infrastructure sacrificed to anti-“woke” crusades.

The Trump regime has ordered nine top universities to agree to its demands or lose access to federal funds.
