Day eight: seeing Nobuhiko Ôbayashi’s 1977 horror/comedy, House. I technically haven’t watched it yet, but I’m in the theater waiting for it to start, so wanted to post before I forget. I know very little about it, so I’m looking forward to whatever is about to transpire!

The interminable search for employment continues. I've lost count of how many times I've applied for an entry level studio assistant or mail room or administrative role without so much as a phone interview. Today I seriously considered applying for a job transporting lawn maintenance goats.

Not to be a movie snob, but the options for "favorite director" provided on the AMC A-list personality/taste profile are embarrassingly basic.

I'll repeat this until the LLMs bubble finally bursts: We were told NFTs were "the future" "here to stay" and "inevitable"

Where's that market now.

Jason Blum's take on AI sucks. an AI takeover isn't inevitable, and treating it as such (while also referring to filmmaking as "content creation," smdh) helps AI companies promote the lie that their deeply unprofitable, destructive tech is more powerful and useful than it actually is.

Oh lordy. I heard these stories from various people involved. If you want to work in TV, or just are curious about how thoroughly things can go wrong, definitely check this out.

How could a straight-to-series greenlight go so wrong for the first TV series I ever created?! Today, the 5AM StoryTalk Podcast brings you Part 1 of a four-part Hollywood horror story I describe as a cautionary tale for screenwriters about what can happen when all your dreams come true.

This screenshot keeps getting wildly pixelated for no apparent reason but I don't want to delete and repost a third time, so... I guess we're stuck with it.

Day seven: I finally got around to watching Presence! Really felt like more of a drama that happened to involve a ghost than a true horror movie, but I really loved the ending. Glad I went in unspoiled!

For day six, I rewatched a forever fave: Donnie Darko. Genuinely cannot believe that this movie is 24 years old. Time is fake.

I keep forgetting to add to this series of posts, but I had a blast watching Abigail on day five! Goofin' vampire shenanigans. (Side note, as a Supernatural fan I'm always struck by an overwhelming sense of "our girl Claire is all grown up!" whenever I watch something with Kat Newton in it 😌)

You could just talk about Jim Crow. I promise you, there's no need to leave America's shores to talk about life in a fascist state
motherjones.com
Under the Third Reich, most Germans generally lived in the law-bound normative state, while Jews and other disfavored people were victims of the arbitrary and violent prerogative state.

The dual state is characterized by the facade of normalcy obscuring the fact of an authoritarian state.
The “dual state” theory was invented to describe Nazis. The Supreme Court could take us there.
Authoritarianism—but make it look like the rule of law.

Please, just stop sending me AI videos of Dad. Stop believing I wanna see it or that I'll understand, I don't and I won't. If you're just trying to troll me, I've seen way worse, i'll restrict and move on. But please, if you've got any decency, just stop doing this to him and to me, to everyone even, full stop. It's dumb, it's a waste of time and energy, and believe me, it's NOT what he'd want.
To watch the legacies of real people be condensed down to 'this vaguely looks and sounds like them so that's enough,
, just so
other people can churn out horrible TikTok slop puppeteering them is maddening. You're not making art, you're making disgusting, over-processed hotdogs out of the lives of human beings, out of the history of art and music, and then shoving them down someone else's throat hoping they'll give you a little thumbs up and like it.
Gross. And for the love of EVERYTHING, stop calling it 'the future. Al is just badly recycling and regurgitating the past to be reconsumed. You are taking in the Human Centipede of content, and from the very very end of the line, all while the folks at the front laugh and laugh, consume and consume.

Now, in Montgomery County, Maryland, where the case originated, the results are in.

Only 43 families out of 160,000 students have exercised that new right.

Shocking absolutely no one, the “marketing company” with zero evidence of any past campaigns or clients on their website, linkedin, or instagram page—and which does not appear to even be a registered business—has not bothered to check their email to see that I cancelled my interview with them.

Finally got a job interview after spending an obscene amount of time sending out more applications than I can reasonably count, and it's turned out to be scammer. I hate this :)

I took a screenwriting class in college and when one of my classmates asked the instructor “What if I don’t want to write or direct but I have a lot of ideas and I want other people to make them into movies?” the instructor said, “That’s a producer.”

For day four of my spooky season marathon I rewatched The Dead Don't Die, which is honestly a really fun, weird zomedy that I think people were unfairly critical of when it came out.

CALIFORNIANS!!!!

You’re gonna start getting your ballots. Vote YES for prop/ state measure 50, (it will be titled differently in different counties.)

Vote as soon as you get your ballot so that phone calls and texts can be directed to people who need more convincing.

The ICE agents deploying these are people without necessary training, those who couldn’t cut it in police training or didn’t want to join the military.

They are in this to hurt people and play Call of Duty on our streets, deploying chemical weapons on our neighbors as if they’re pressing L1.

Just one horror movie for day three: rewatched Late Night with the Devil. Still really like this one, though I can't stop mentally referring to it as The Tonight Show with Cousin Greg. (I can't possibly be the only one who sees the resemblance.)

Forgot to post day two's marathon viewing! Watched Color Out of Space, which was visually cool as hell--especially toward the end--though I'm still not sold on the story. Followed up with Talk to Me, which I've been meaning to watch for ages, and definitely hit all the what-the-fuck buttons.
Screenshot from Color Out of Space (2019). Lavinia, covered in blood and with her eyes and forehead glowing with alien magenta light, stares past the camera. Screenshot from Talk to Me (2022). Possessed with glossy black eyes, Mia grins while sitting unnaturally sideways in a brown leather armchair.
