The five hours were very generally expected to come in fits and starts in an eight-hour-ish working/availability window. But there wasn't anything super strict about it. It's just how the work worked. Totally different than transportation, retail, construction, etc. Agree about a class divide here.

I worked a remote writing job where the boss said they expected about five hours of solid work from people a day, & if we were working longer than that, the quality was likely to go down. Our schedules were project-based and we were expected to speak up if we felt overloaded. These were FT jobs. 1/
