Finally finishing Rainer Hamilton's Lilacs in the park on the most beautiful evening I think of the year, after a 2-week gap between the 6th and 7th poems. This is a book with style, (of course!) but also with substance, a serious book about pleasure and love, I adore and recommend it

No one can do sentences like Sybil Lamb. Only she would write "like an Autobot-Transformer but one that was made of meat" and it's so much better than the "like an autobot transformer made of meat" that anyone else would write, and I do not even understand why at all

AND THEN THIS the master has a photocopy of the collage pasted in it, but I found the original collage too and used it, and the gain in detail and tone is very satisfying to me, the f in "for" had fallen off though so I had to copy that in from the photocopy in the masters lol

FINALLY two of my favourites. Here is a photo from #1 of Mirha outside Cafe Cleo in Montreal. The color original was pasted into the master, so I include a scan of it was well for comparison. I think we preserved much more of its vibe!

Some photos the originals weren't in the archive, and only existed as a resized photocopy pasted into the master. These were a challenge. But I did my best, and I think the results are still a worthwhile improvement

Some of the ambitious text effects in the masters didn't quite come though in printing. We tried to fix that! Here is one from issue 3 that was a bit dark and hard to read in the zine. I had to invent a whole new (afaik) process for separating text from half-tone background to make this happen!
November 5, 2025 at 8:27 PM
In many situations, scanning direct from the masters simply allowed for more detail being retained because we were able to use a higher resolution than a photocopy in 1993! Look at the rose here for instance, the gradations of shade that we were able to preserve

Here is the hooker of the year photo from Issue 2, I found and scanned the original for this in the archives and dropped it in in place of the photocopy of the photo which was pasted into the master and the results are very pleasing
