people on the internet may not know I have taste

As those of you who have had me make you one know, I thoroughly endorse the wet martini

Here I am in Slate, bravely coming out in favor of sweet, wet martinis (they gave this a more dramatic headline than intended but I stand by my feelings) slate.com/life/2025/10...

"I tend to think of Andy Izenson as an excessive punk-goth freakazoid shock poet of insane cultic religion and violent gory sex, and if that’s what you’re looking for, you will find it here, but it’s by no means all you will find...It’s a book that dares to be romantic and sweet and vulnerable."

Damn. This is amazing. £325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy:

Post from Threads user rodneyowl: "Ireland has declared the Basic Income for Artists scheme permanent. This will be officially announced in tomorrow’s budget. Details to follow. Congratulations to all who fought for it and the present and future artists of all sorts in Ireland. That includes me 👌We’re just comin to the end of a 3 year pilot scheme. It’s been a roaring success. For every €1 paid out to the 2000 participants, the government got €1.46 back. Can’t argue with that. Other countries are already taking note."

I generally endorse poetry bumper stickers, but no. Exactly the opposite.

This is of niche industry interest, but here goes:

The digital catalog platform most independent bookstores use to peruse and order new books for their stores (called Edelweiss) has jacked up their prices on publishers to catalog new titles 200-300%.

Why does this matter?

Rutilio Manetti A Life Study: a Monk Sleeping against a Pile of Books 1616 (The Morgan)

I think this is much more likely a friar than a monk. But it's still a wonderful image.

I will not stop recommending Lote to _everyone_. Historians, librarians and archivists, writers. These are all the types of people I’m aware of and they all simply must read it so I can ask them my questions.

If the minister laid mines someone could bring a suit challenging this on the basis it contravenes our ratification of the mine ban treaty. But then if the minister laid mines outside the courtroom, there would be no way for the court to order a stoppage. This is a potential constitutional crisis!

I am so tired of being told that I, a person who got a significant portion of my diet out of dumpsters in my early 20's, hold elitist & "luxury" beliefs by people who have been Professors of Thinking at Harvard since before I was born.

If your considered analysis is that everyone has gone completely mad except for you, then is it likely that’s what happened? Or is it you that is the arse here.

"the left has allowed itself to become shackled by unpopular luxury beliefs: abolishing the police, opening the borders, the corruption of female-only spaces. Everyone has gone mad...associated with the observable decline in literacy across the rich West"

the editor of a piece that i am working on + very excited about right now queried me about a reference to Jack Chick, which has sent me down a rabbit hole, and also reminded me of this promotional tract I drew for my first novel. I actually wrote to Chick Publications asking if they'd print it
"The temptation you're talking about is LOVE! Because love involves caring about people! That means feeling guilty if things don't go how you want them to! And that means causality--and that means the same flawed, time-bound thinking that led to the ATOMIC BOMB! In order to achieve greatness and avoid destroying our planet, I need to reject all love!" says Patty, snapping her fingers.

"You got it," says another voice.

Panel 2: Julie Thatch calls: "Hey babe! We're doing some tests down at the lab tonight! Wanna come over and make out?"
"Sorry, you timebound loser!" crows Patty. "I've been saved by the Institute and Dr. Bantam! ENJOY FEELING GUILTY!" She hangs up. Jules says: "Oh well, her loss! But what's that---YAAAAAGH!"

In the background, a scientist (who I remember consider coloring red, like that one Chick tract about the rock musicians) says: "I'm afraid you should have listened to your friend! Now get the best science has to offer--DEATH!"

Final panel, Patty, standing in front of a bunch of weirdos smiling with dead faces, says: "Thanks to the applied philosophies of Dr. Bantam, I'm going to be morally perfect forever!" A caption tells us: "You can be perfect too! To begin your personal journey, YOU MUST LOOK AT THE NEXT PAGE!" (The next page is an ad for buying the novel at O/R Books's website made up to look like the Chick Tract boilerplate)
