I didn’t know Neo-Impressionists did bourgeois interior scenes commenting ironically on the C19 domestic ideal, but there are two superb examples by Paul Signac in the Radical Harmony exhibition now on at @thenationalgallery.bsky.social

On June 24, I began my Election Night speech by quoting Mandela: “It always seems impossible until it’s done.” That's the spirit of this campaign, and our city.

This is "Until It’s Done,” a new series about New Yorkers who refused to accept that a worthy goal was impossible.

Indeed: the populists do make people poorer, but then they blame anyone but themselves: immigrants, unions, foreign wars etc.

Poor people are disgruntled.

Ripe for exploitation by populists.

Rinse and repeat. (As we’re seeing now)

As we prepare for the next tidal wave of nonsense around Reform in the UK, two points should stand out as the core rebuttal

- economic issues the UK faces are the same as many other countries
- populist right policies have made those issues worse

Honking endorsement for Farage, Johnson et la, without a moment’s reflection that 10 years of UKIPified Tory govt created the mess they’re railing about — booming benefits bills, bond market routs, immigration surges, trade slump and investment slumps. Bring back Boris and Nadine! That’ll fix it. 🙈

If your research centrally involves the 19th-c. British press, you should for sure consider applying for a Curran Fellowship. Anybody can apply, and the process is blessedly straightforward. My late friend Eileen Curran would be proud to see all the fine projects that her generosity has assisted in.

📣 Curran Fellowships are now OPEN! Per our most recent newsletter, we've moved up our Curran awards to allow recipients time to plan summer travel. Applications due Oct. 15. As always, guidelines and more info are on our website!

Irish history / photo nerd klaxon: thanks to dedicated archivists @librarycongress.bsky.social, I’ve reconstructed the 1907 ‘Ireland through the Stereoscope’ full 100-card set from their archives. It’s the only complete one I’ve found in a public collection - an amazing record of 19th/20th c Ireland
Ten stacks of stereographs in mylar protective sleeves, next to a 19th c stereoviewer, showing early 3D scenes of Ireland
