I plan cities for people & other living things. I post on life in SEA, PDX, Utrecht, women who create cities, bikes, climate. I'm on Boards @bikeloudpdx.bsky.social @sngreenways.bsky.social & volunteer @ BikeFlip + Fietsmeesters in Utrecht. She/her. PhD
Morning rush hour.
Safe routes to school.
Streets designed for people to fully live their lives.

Not a city (or a country) at war with its own people.

Rotterdam public space:
Grassy tracks.
Door zone bike lanes.
Trees.
Sidewalk cafes.
Public art.
Narrow driving lanes.
Strictly enforced paid car parking.

Such a pretty city without cars.

Utrecht.

Markus Stitz wrote & photographed a stunning story about his 677km (420 mi) bike ride across Norway in mid-winter. Includes my favorite photo in the entire issue.

A rare sunny day in winter.
Long midafternoon shadows of bikes, cargobikes & buses.
Streets designed for people to fully live their lives.

Not a city (or a country) at war with its own people.
I ❤️ Utrecht

The Dutch will double intercity bike routes in the next 5 years, from 1100 to 2300km.

Every city has local routes: Utrecht, for example, has 420km of separated bike lanes & bike streets. 𝘿𝙤𝙤𝙧𝙛𝙞𝙚𝙩𝙨𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙩𝙚𝙨 allow people to safety go by bike throughout NL.

This week in the Netherlands, 100s of buses & trains stopped service, freeway traffic is epic, & more than 2000 flights have been cancelled at Schiphol Airport. It usually doesn't snow much in NL, and if it does, it's a light dusting.

But nothing can stop people getting to the gym in the new year.

Sneckdowns*, Utrecht style.

*What the heck is a sneckdown?
A sneckdown, or snow neckdown, is a temporary lane created by snowfall, where snow has built up in the road but not been flattened by bike traffic, effectively reshaping the curb. A sneckdown shows how much road space a bike (or a car) use.

We made a little progress on the bike pile this week -- but more bikes are arriving all the time!

Despite two days of snow in Utrecht NL and people are still biking.

Paths haven't been cleared over the weekend, but wide lanes, clear signals, and well-controlled car drivers make biking possible.

Even better (for the kids, not the mechanics), a lot of the tiny bikes have handbrakes so children can learn to control and brake early.

I ❤️ my volunteer work in the Netherlands, helping to refurbish old bikes, mostly for children.

First snowy day of the year in Utrecht NL.

We're all still biking (a little colder, a little slower).

Portland already has a car network.

Who’s ready for a complete bike network rapidly deployed throughout PDX in 2026 – including street diverters that keep our kids safe when they walk and bike?

These are our shared streets. We can decide to make streets work for all of us!

Happy 2026!

Wishing you all a year of being on a bike or in a cargo bike with the people you love.

The Dutch government already banned personal fireworks in most major cities. Starting in 2026, home fireworks will also be banned across the country -- but they seemed to be exploding everywhere I went for most of last night in a final hurrah.

These are chain covers, kettingcast, for bicycles. Every Dutch bike comes with a chain cover.

Today at BikeFlip.nl in Utrecht, the used bike rental service where I volunteer, hundreds of kettingcast were dumped out & sorted into matched pairs.

As a novice bike mechanic, kettingcast drive me crazy.

Why do we bike?

Climate, affordability, sociability, peace on earth, fun, comfort & joy🚲

Even e-cars are built with and rely on fossil fuel energy.

The people of Venezuela, Nigeria, Libya, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Russia, United States might all be better off if we could just leave it in the ground.

POV: You need a new garden fence & live in a country with mountains of no longer useable bikes.

What do you do? Weld 10 old bikes to a metal bar and spraypaint everything the same color.
