Altruism, love, compassion, respect.

The qualities from chimpanzees (and the best of humanity) that Jane Goodall wished for the future, just a week before her death.

How can we recover our respect and love for the natural world, including for other people?

America has veered so far, so fast from what is good, what is right.

Children & elders were handcuffed w zip-ties. An entire 5-story apartment complex emptied at night by 300 US agents in masks to find 6 people who might have committed a crime

I write this looking out at 5-story apartments near me

Everyone needs to be watching what's happening here in Chicago:

* About 300 fed agents invaded a 5 story apartment complex across from an elementary school

* Snipers rappelled down from Black Hawk helicopters

* Nearly all residents were removed - some children were dragged naked from their homes
Massive immigration raid on Chicago apartment building leaves residents reeling: 'I feel defeated'
The Department of Homeland Security said federal agents with Border Patrol, the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives arrested 37 people in the raid.

Absolutely! With a bike, women can get to work, go shopping, bike with their kids to school, visit friends...

Especially with excellent Dutch bike infrastructure, their lives become so much easier!

I'm volunteering with an organization that teaches adults in the Netherlands how to bike

The 10 women in my group are working hard, and a few have already learned how to balance after just 2 lessons! Still 8 more lessons to learn turning, avoiding obstacles, road signs, etc.

Super-rewarding work!

Jane Goodall was a force for good. She devoted her life to primates & their wild habitats.

Keep focus on what is good!

Jane Goodall was een kracht ten goede. Getrouwd met de Nederlandse natuurfotograaf Hugo van Lawick, hield ze zich haar hele leven lang bezig met primaten en hun wilde leefgebieden

What's a School Street you ask?

And then you ask, why aren't all transportation decision-makers choosing to build more streets for children?

Side-by-side tandems are a game changer for people who, for whatever reason, can no longer cycle independently.

Thanks to the bike and a buddy (often a volunteer) these people can get moving again.

Besides a lot of cycling happiness, this also benefits physical and mental health!

This is the SMALL bike parking garage next to Utrecht Centraal Station. Free for 24 hours. With a bike repair shop, a few hundred OVfiets rental bikes, and a 24/7 secure, staffed parking lot for 4,200 bikes.

The new lot on the other side of the station holds 11,500 bikes.

If you can drive or afford a car, you may not understand what it’s like to rely on walking, rolling, transit and asking for rides. But for nearly a third of people living in the United States – people with disabilities, young people, seniors and people who can’t afford cars or gas – this is our every day.
We created the Week Without Driving experience so that those who have the option to drive can learn firsthand about the barriers and challenges that nondrivers face and work with nondrivers to create more accessible communities for all.

In Portland, the act of riding a bike is an excellent way of being outside, observing life, and being completely present in public space.

Riding with other people builds friendships + builds communities of trust.

Be well. Be strong. Bike with a buddy Portland! 🚲❤️

Billionaires may lust for yachts.

I'm imagining life on this canal boat that I saw just hanging out today in Utrecht.
Small green boat with portals along its side. The top of the boat is lined with colorful flowers and flags, and a table with four chairs waiting for people to sit down for a leisurely lunch.

HOW DOES THE WEEK WITHOUT DRIVING WORK?

1. Every Trip Counts
2. You can ask someone else to drive you
3. Think about Who Has Choices, What Are Your Choices?
4. It’s Okay to Drive – But Reflect What That Means for Nondrivers

Are YOU up for the #WeekWithoutDriving challenge?
➡️ buff.ly/aNtmAhR
From America Walks page. Four photos of smiling people. Text says, "HOW DOES THE WEEK WORK
Every Trip Counts
You can get around however you want, but the challenge is not to drive yourself in any car. This applies to all your activities — not just your work commute. If you normally transport other family members or friends, it applies to those trips too.
Asking or Paying for Rides
You can ask someone else to drive you, but make a note of how much you “owe” this person in their time, and if you felt obligated to support them in other ways (ie, doing all the dishes). You can ride hail or taxis if they exist where you need to go, but again, think about how the cost could impact your decision to take this trip if this was regularly your only option.
Who Has Choices, What Are Your Choices?
This isn’t a disability simulation or a test of how easily you can find alternatives. We know that it is far easier to give up your keys if you can afford to live in a walkable area well served by transit, or can outsource your driving and other transport and delivery needs to other people.
It’s Okay to Drive – But Reflect What That Means for Nondrivers
Having to drive during the challenge does not signify failure. Sometimes the best reflection comes when someone participating in the challenge has to drive. The point is to consider how someone without that option would have coped, and what choices they might have made.

I'm the only American in an advanced Dutch language class. My classmates come from many places that represent a broad cross-section of the darkness we are now fighting: Afghanistan, Argentina, Hungary, Iran, and the Ukraine.

Discussions at breaks can be heartbreaking.
We must not stop resisting.

Congratulations on expecting a new baby!

My kids were home births. Most of the people in our "Prepping for home birth" class chose a home birth to save money.

The people who work in health professions are great but the American health care system is quite dreadful.

Better than biking in the US for sure, but it sounds like even northern Europe still needs to control its cars better.

(I'm so spoiled here in Utrecht. I forget the rest of the world tolerates bad driving and car culture.)
