David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

AI HUCKSTER: "i built you a machine that reads books for you."

ME: "can you build me a machine that unloads the dishwasher for me so *i* can read a book?"

They killed it early on and are now desecrating its corpse.

One of two fair comics that made me cry, @mariabrennmb.bsky.social's 'In The Heart of the Island' is a 90-page folk-fantasy tale about unquestioningly following decades-long held traditions and the dangers such a path can lead towards.

Available now at the fair!

For me, seeing almost all the info about the book in one place like that really ramped up my interest, too 😁

Oh okay! Sure, you probably can't have a question about EVERY reason people might preorder.
cayemarsh.bsky.social
One thing your survey failed to capture, as there didn't seem to be any questions about it, was name recognition of the author. I would say that's the biggest factor in my willingness to pre-order. If I don't already know and love the author, generally I won't order until after it comes out.

13) This isn't news to me, but the manosphere complaint that "you can't compliment anyone anymore!" is bullshit.

I compliment people constantly, all day, and get warm smiles and heartfelt thanks and watch people walk away in a better mood. The secret is not being a gross creep about it.

They WILL go where the jobs are. Other countries.

18 & 19 year olds with no income support should “just go where the jobs are” said the Prime Minister who famously had his limo deliver him across the road.

“Good luck with the train-hopping, you plucky young hobos,” he added, suggesting hedge-&-ditch as an affordable alternative to bed-&-breakfast.

When I turned 25 I was legit deeply concerned that I had not yet written The Great American Novel, now at 56 if I could time travel back to meet that young fellow worried about not having birthed a True Work of Timeless Art in his first quarter century, I would, lovingly, turn the hose upon him

I need to hear this as a late 20-something who's worried that if I haven't had a solid career since 18, my life is pointless.
