THE POPE HAS THROWN A RAVE

I am now experiencing FOMO about the Pope's rave

god, cyberpunk novels of my teenagerhood weren't weird ENOUGH
He said "Amen" straight into the drop

Lmao Pope Leo threw a rave for an archbishop's 75th birthday this is kind of incredible

I considered writing a long carefully constructed argument laying out the harms and limitations of AI, but instead I wrote about being a hater. Only humans can be haters.

I am an AI hater. This is considered rude, but I do not care, because I am a hater.

I am on my knees begging climate people and energy people and housing people to just this once pass the puck to where they are skating to, not where they are at. This is the fight, here. The whole game is physical infrastructure. It is car-enforcing land use all the way down.

There is no path to abundant housing without transit.

... and isn't there some link to be made - more elegantly than I'm going to make it - about the reduction of meaning to legibility that helps to open the space for the devoid?

(yes, I'll put another dollar in the Seeing Like A State swearjar)
relatedly Seeing Like a State is an excellent book for none of the obvious textual or subtextual reasons; it made it a lot easier to think about People, in gestalt, and also a lot about Metrics, and how bending People to Metrics makes the metric worthless and causes people to die

This is very, very good, and exceptionally unsettling. My favorite sort of cultural criticism (being that which is also art criticism).

The spaces described are both unheimlich/uncanny and BLEAK AS FUCK, which is (I think) central to the argument, & also utterly grim as sociocultural commentary.
Over the past few weeks, HiLoBrow has run installments of my long essay “Without Care,” which maps out a 21st century gothic that I started calling The Devoid. All four installments are now live and you can read the whole thing here; enjoy!

‘Incent’ is not a verb. You cannot ‘incent’ anything. Nor can you give someone ‘incents’, like you’re handing out indulgences.

If you wish to drive people to do something, you can damn well incentivize them via providing incentives.

please stop business-idiot speak from infiltrating your language
What's your most niche and unimportant crusade?

Mine is that I use the symbol "var" (as scientific standards bodies indicate) for reactive power instead of "VAR" (most common) or something weird like "Var" or worse, "VAr".

I'll admit it does feel a bit odd to put "Mvar" next to "MW" and "MVA". 🔌💡

I'll be beating this drum constantly between now and April:

Zohran must play nice with the governor to advance his agenda. But our task, at the grassroots, is to use Hochul's fear of losing re-election to push her incessantly and publicly.

Well done on climate, Third Act 👏
“'She did not just approve a fossil fuel project. She made a moral choice,' Lt. Gov. Antonio Delgado (D), who is primarying Hochul, said on Monday. 'New Yorkers deserve a governor who does not treat the climate crisis as a PR problem, but as a test of moral leadership.'”
Hochul enrages environmentalists with shift to ‘all of the above’ energy policy
Democrats are focusing on affordability over climate goals as midterm elections loom.

the path forward is clear: we must elect pro-transit mayors in an unbroken string of municipalities from NYC to Seattle, and finally get that high-speed rail line built. forget the feds, forget the states even
🚨🚨 Just in: Katie Wilson has expanded her lead in the Seattle mayor race. She is now leading by 1,976 votes, which means that the race is no longer in automatic recount territory.

DuPree was previously the mayor of Hattiesburg.
