Peter Jackson tore the heart out of LOTR when he left the Scouring of the Shire out of the movies. I think the first chapters of Fellowship of the Ring are essential for appreciating the last chapters of Return of the King. so yeah, physical features of a place inform its political economy. Agriculture sustains the hobbitses way of life. it doesn't make sense to complain about Tolkien's descriptiveness, as my generation of readers likes to do. He chose his words purposefully. The geology, topography, climate, hydrology, etc of the Shire determines what organisms it sustains, and informs land use/allocation and civic infrastructure.

it's a nice, peaceful day up here, and im lounging around, reading Lord of the Rings. When i was younger, i would make a point to read it every year or so. It's been ~10 years since i've last read it, & im applying the full brunt of everything i've learned about the world since then to its analysis.
