if you have a heightened sense of situational awareness because your weird brain got tweaked into a weird vigilant state due to trauma/overwork/burnout/???, it's fun to stand in a quiet yard or garden for a while. Your 360-degree sensorium will pinpoint a squirrel farting at 7:00, 30 yards away, etc

you could probably make some badass boots from the hide of that thing...

some of these books are crapola, so please do not take their presence on here as an endorsement

Peter Jackson tore the heart out of LOTR when he left the Scouring of the Shire out of the movies. I think the first chapters of Fellowship of the Ring are essential for appreciating the last chapters of Return of the King. But this is extemporaneous observation... more cogent reportage to follow??
cccp.bsky.social
that said, im not sure how avowed fascists over the years have tortured LOTR into corroborating a chudlord worldview. Maybe this re-read will shine some light there.

so yeah, physical features of a place inform its political economy. Agriculture sustains the hobbitses way of life. But with this comes the suggestion of a stratified society, maybe even worse than the UK of Tolkien's day. Sam calls Frodo "master"—sounds more servile than a Downton Abbey "domestic"
cccp.bsky.social
it doesn't make sense to complain about Tolkien's descriptiveness, as my generation of readers likes to do. He chose his words purposefully. The geology, topography, climate, hydrology, etc of the Shire determines what organisms it sustains, and informs land use/allocation and civic infrastructure.

it's a nice, peaceful day up here, and im lounging around, reading Lord of the Rings. When i was younger, i would make a point to read it every year or so. It's been ~10 years since i've last read it, & im applying the full brunt of everything i've learned about the world since then to its analysis.
cccp.bsky.social
this all started because i was thinking about a gluten-free benedict formulation, some kind of basal element to soak up the gloop
cccp.bsky.social
feels like the eggs/rice needs something else. it's kind of gloopy and both things have similar textures. a potato element would not go amiss here. hmmmm....

breakfast is poached eggs + "Indian" (UP-style? at least the people who taught me this way of making rice were from there... somewhere... it's a big place, sorry, i cant be more specific) rice + Ceylon tea from the samovar

Water chickweed or ushihakobe (Stellaria aquatica). The flower has five petals but look like ten since each are divided into half. There are five stamens in spiral configuration. Tokikubo, Komoro, Nagano #Plants #Botany

There are pale yellow balls at the tip of the stamens. Plant of ushihakobe. White flowers with fine petals. Leaves are pointy and grow in opposites.

Large female jorogumo (Trichonephila clavata). Common spider along with nagakoganegumo (Argiope bruennichi) in this area. The brown clumps of dust on the web are the remains of her meals. Tokikubo, Komoro, Nagano #Invertebrate #Spiders

Remember when these people were banging on about al-Qaeda, and saying that they are enemy number one?
We all said that al-Qaeda were an AmeriKKKan proxy, just like ISIS.
Look at them cheering for them.
Newspaper excerpt titled "Syria Chooses a Parliament of Revolutionaries" under the section 'Syria After Civil War'. The article discusses the first elections since the Assad regime was ousted, noting the lack of popular vote and limited representation for women and minorities, yet emphasizing that many Syrians view the event as progress toward ending authoritarian rule.

Al-Gholani, NATO al-qaeda salafi head-chopper has installed his genocidal khalifate yes-men dictatorship to (temporarily) serve israel, US and Turkish interests.

Sorry but some of y'all you mfers swallowed classic imperial "WMD"-style CIA lies about Assad regime & will never own up to it.

Given the behavior of Jay and that team member who did the unironic "You're being racist against AI users" post, I think it's fair to say these people are frying their brain on chatgpt shit lol

Mysterious Lecanora. I’ve taken photos of this lichen so many times, and it changes from season to season, in wet or dry, hot or cold. Tokikubo, Komoro, Nagano #Lichen #FungiFriends
ようかんみたいな子器をもつレカノーラの仲間。長野県小諸市鴇久保 #地衣類
Close-up of the apothecia disks of Lecanora lichen. The larger disks are round with brown-purple interior and white rim. The smaller disks are concaved making them look like bowls rather than disks. The thallus of lichen is rough, grainy textured and green.

“Abridging has always been in vogue—“

No, it hasn’t. And why’s The New Yorker putting out a press release for some dumb app?
newyorker.com
Abridging has always been in vogue. Now, apps like Blinkist take entire books and crunch them down to a series of what are called Blinks—which amount to around 2,000 words. “Is that what books are coming to, a handy social lubricant?” Anthony Lane asks.
Can You Read a Book in a Quarter of an Hour?
Phone apps now offer to boil down entire books into micro-synopses. What they leave out is revealing.
