You're funny and you're right!

@dqcdata.bsky.social, I think you might be interested in the supply brief as it seems a great way for states to leverage their SLDSs!
cedr.bsky.social
These were fun to do b/c they offer really practical advice about how to better utilize (mostly) existing data, so hopefully become more efficient + I got to work w/ a great set of co-authors!

These briefs describe concrete ways to use SLDSs (on the supply side) and job posts/web scraping (on the demand side) to get a better/quicker assessment of the state of the teacher labor market.

Happy to announce that @caldercenter.bsky.social just released two IES-funded briefs - they really are BRIEF! - about how to get a better handle on teacher demand and future teacher supply:

Demand side: caldercenter.org/publications...

They actually mention those (briefly) in the discussion! I don't know much about it, but apparently this has been a successful strategy in Britain.

That's a good question. My sense is that there's lots of testing about testing mode changes, but it's definitely outside my area of expertise. That said, there was some @caldercenter.bsky.social research on this topic a while back: caldercenter.org/publications...

That would help explain the pattern of NAEP scores: it's the lower-achieving students that are really struggling. Let's add it to the mix of things that need evaluation.

@natmalkus.bsky.social, great episode, but don't think I didn't notice that there wasn't a GRADE IT - very disappointing.

This is just based on casual observation, but I'm not sure how much computer use is helping kids. I'm especially suspicious that computers may detrimental, especially for low-achieving kids as it could be a babysitter (I know kids are playing games in some classrooms). 👇
cedr.bsky.social
Terrific discussion about why test scores are falling (started before the pandemic!)! Lots of potential reasons, but I'd like to throw out an additional one. Everyone talks about phones, but I wonder if it's computers in schools (as a factor). 👇

All of these findings underscore the idea that changing the demographics of who becomes a teacher is challenging and probably needs to happen pretty early (possibly even before college entry to influence the SAT distribution).

cedr.bsky.social
We also find that lower-SAT college students are disproportionately interested in teaching, but the SAT differences are not huge.
3/n
cedr.bsky.social
The results are not terribly surprising, white females are much more likely to express an interest in teaching than are other demographic groups, but even conditional on that interest, they are more likely to select a teacher ed major once in college.
