Spear, a Nicola Griffith short novel that reimagines the Arthurian legend of Percival as a woman. Very magical in the traditional sense and more gorgeous writing (I love Griffith's works)

Nicola Griffith's Hild series (Hild and Menewood), 600s Britain at the cusp of Christianity, imagining the early life of Hilda of Whitby. Amazing writing, not "magic" in the traditional sense but magical in Hild's relationship with the natural world and how she uses it to "see" where others cannot.

Carrie Vaughn's The Naturalist Society, where Arcane Taxonomists unlock magical powers in the Victorian age of discovery, with queer love and a widowed woman realizing her talent in a world of men. There is a sequel, The Glass Slide World, that I haven't started yet but plan to.

This story from @nirhasson.bsky.social demonstrates not only the scale of the carnage (at least 4% of Gaza's population) but the truly unprecedented targeting of civilians. Women and children account for 56% of those killed - more than twice their share in Sudan, Syria and Iraq.

They’ve bombed abortion clinics, killed doctors, sentenced women to death over unwanted pregnancies, killed trans and queer people for asking for rights. There’s literally no kind of political violence that I’ve not seen come from the right in this country, and it’s never engaged with seriously.

“If this was done by another country, we absolutely would call this corruption,” said Kristofer Harrison, a former high-level State Department official in the George W. Bush administration. “Because it is corruption.”
