🚨CEN Colloquium🚨
Thanks to Andreas Pohlmann for introducing us to his beautiful photographs yesterday.

"Nothing is beautiful, nothing is ugly... Every habitat has its own value."

Spot CEN postdoc @marlena-mayer.bsky.social at last week's International Conference on Infant and Early Child Development @lancasteruni.bsky.social. She introduced the MPIB's new #babylab, and presented a study design on infants' visual preferences for natural v urban landscapes 🐿️

Seeing my baby lab vision come to life after I have poured all kinds of brain juices into it for the past 6 months is a strange but rewarding experience. Excited to announce we're finally ready to open! 🐿️

...rural areas are marked by strong community ties, yet often have limited healthcare access & treatment options. Inconsistent definitions, unequal study distribution globally, and the cross-sectional nature of findings create limitations. Read the pre-print here! osf.io/preprints/ps...

Preliminary findings = urban living in the North increases mental disorder risks, while rural life offers better quality of life; urban areas in the South may enhance mental health. Note the complexity of effects: urban areas induce stress from overcrowding/pollution but offer better healthcare...

The lit review explores effects of urban & rural environment on health, brain, #cognition, personality & #epigenetics across the Global North & South. Analysis of 500+ articles over 40 years:
🔎lack of empirical evidence for the urban south
🔎GN and GS trends in environmental effects often diverge

A few weeks ago we had a great kick-off meeting at the #Charité, sharing our work on #Environment, #Neuroscience and #MentalHealth, and look forward to the coming exchanges and studies that will deepen understandings of the interplay between environment and mental health. Watch this space!
A group of 21 researchers of different ages and gender stand in a row behind a long table in a conference room. They are all facing the camera and smiling, many with their arms held in front of them. Behind them is a screen with the words "Arbeitsgruppe Psychiatric Environmental Neuroscience (PEN) projected onto it. A group of researchers are gathered in a white-walled conference room or classroom. The researchers, mostly clad in dark casual clothing, sit at right-angled tables, and turned to face someone in the back row, who appears to be speaking. They look serious and in concentration.

Martin Lövdén visited @mpib-berlin.bsky.social today and delivered some surprising conclusions about the (limited) effects of various interventions on behavior among older adults. The takeaway? To improve cognition in older adults, focus on early development.
