Almost all of us are the descendants of immigrants who fled persecution, or were brought to America under duress, or sought better lives for themselves and their descendants.

Politicians who stoke fear and hatred over immigration want you to forget this.

Do not.

There is no such thing as public health without health equity. Equity is the part of public health that makes it, well, public! It’s a core value. Very disappointed in my Alma Mater here. And as we’ve seen countless times, these concessions do nothing to prevent being targeted by this administration
UNC Gillings School of Public Health is eliminating their Health Equity & Social Justice Concentration. This program is home to many of my friends — some of the most thoughtful, caring, and innovative researchers I know.

I don’t know what’s more disheartening—the administration cutting DEI and science funding or how quickly institutions and researchers erase any mention of diversity and equity from their materials.

I leaked out of the scientific pipeline 20 years ago and returned 5 years ago, dismayed to find the same barriers for mothers and marginalized folks. Now, under the guise of efficiency, the US scientific system is set to become even harsher—I’m incredibly discouraged but trying not to give up.
On #IWD2025, we’re pressing pause & brainstorming strategies to #accelerateaction for building an inclusive STEMM sector. We need your help! What challenges affected your career since becoming a parent? Share your experiences & help us shape policies for caregiver inclusion!👇

This is why capitalism and patriarchy go hand-in-hand.

And why "Lean In" only works for privileged women who can afford to outsource most or all of their caregiving labor, pushing it onto other women--often women of color--more vulnerable than them.

The celebration of "hardcore" work culture is keeping us from gender equality.

If men can only be "successful" by working so much they're eating every meal at the office, then they have incentive to avoid any care work that might pull them away. Which means pushing all the care onto women instead.

And to watch so many of you allow it and further, debate back and forth whether DEI was a failed experiment, has been yet another trauma not only for me but for the trainees who come to my office and sit in a zoom call and ask questions I have no answers for about why no one cares.
