Is digital public infrastructure like roads, an essential infrastructure that others can build businesses on? Or like radio, which makes an informed citizenry possible and is a backbone of democracy? Smart, thoughtful essay engages with some of my work: www.techpolicy.press/what-is-digi...

My colleague @chandrn.bsky.social _ has smart, practical ideas on how we can make data portable not just once, but on an ongoing, regular basis. I love his mix of policy prescriptions and practical, programmer "just do it"...
Just uploaded a working paper about what "continuous and realtime" data portability should look like in practice. In one word: webhooks! papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

A level-headed approach to solving the privacy issues with “middleware” or interoperability. This is the biggest gating issue for changes to our tech ecosystem that could be profoundly game-changing. A workable privacy approach to interoperability would be a HUGE step forward.

We argue that the crisis of legitimacy facing platforms has its roots in their adoption of a "customer service" model of online governance. We propose a return to models of governance that emphasize community participation, drawing on work from @zittrain.bsky.social and Aviv Ovadya, among others
