New: A heat pump that can be installed in minutes is allowing Boston to quickly decarbonize a public housing complex for the elderly and provide air conditioning as climate change-driven heat waves intensify. The window heat pump is made by SF startup Gradient.

There's also Kanopy and Hoopla! Libraries rule!

You know what's a great, free way to watch movies and listen to audiobooks in our declining empire? Your local public library (if still open)! I quit Audible when I quit Amazon, and I listen to more books now, through Libby, than I did before. Libraries have DVDs, too! Maybe even DVD players!

From a 2019 interview with Kitagawa -- "it was common sense that organic materials could not make a stable porous structure. People thought we were doing “useless” research because they did not realize the potential of the seemingly trivial space inside the pores." pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/...

Today's reading begins with Lise Meitner, who co-discovered nuclear fission (she wrote the paper!) and was in general an INCREDIBLE trailblazing scientist.

Except, as a Jew, she had to flee Nazi Germany to Sweden and lost her professorship in Berlin. The men she worked with got the prize instead 🧪🔭

Thank you for being so kind. You always are, and we value that.

Kvetch: Why does Bluesky give me no science (it did not even bring up last night's Nobel Prize in Medicine?). The Twitter, before turning into a cesspool, did that.

Michael Peskin might have been in the audience. Maybe. He got it. I never wrote it down, so curls still remain a problem set.

I promised to do it without a single formula. Might have been a lecture on Green's theorem for flux. I explained the birdtracks technology, and the rest of the lecture was only birdtracks, no letters. It was beautiful. Kiddies might be still digesting it.

The longer version goes like this:

In Spring 1985 I was a visiting professor in Cornell physics department. One time my friend Mitchell Feigenbaum asked me to teach his insanely popular graduate (no Jackson) E&M course that filled one of the large lecture halls. It was formula after formula.

Well, that has to do with my prejudices: 3d is just a special case, and I would never call 3-index Levi-Civita a "curl". But indeed, it's a homework - if you write it up, I'll add it to birdtrakcs.eu .

An aside: l only respond to science posts, but Nobel Prize for Medicine has not showed up in my feed yet? Algorithm, hello?

The 2025 Nobel Prize in Medicine goes to some neat fundamental research on the immune system: peripheral immune tolerance. It's what keeps the body's defense mechanism in check—and could be key to new therapies for autoimmune disorders. @sciam.bsky.social www.scientificamerican.com/article/2025...

Did you know that UC leadership has *refused to share* the demand letter it received from the Trump administration? We deserve to know what's in it. On Sept. 30, UCLA's Legislative Assembly, which represents senate faculty across campus, voted UNANIMOUSLY to call on admin to show us the letter.
September 30, 2025, Special Legislative Assembly Meeting –

Within every cell is a molecular motor, adenosine triphosphate synthase, which churns out energy-rich molecules for fueling the cell’s activity. By artificially cranking the motor, researchers have discovered that maintaining a fixed rotation rate minimizes energy loss.
How a Molecular Motor Minimizes Energy Waste
Turning a biologically important molecular motor at a constant rate saves energy, according to experiments.
