My greatest hits include “Yes, people lived to 70+ in pre-modern ages; ‘average’ life span of 40 just accounts for all the kids dead before 5 with no #vaccines,” “Yes, birth control was around before Ancient Egyptians,” and “Yes, ffs, #transgender /LGBTQIA have ALWAYS been” 🗃️🧪🩺🏳️‍⚧️

After four years of absurd claims about a Democratic administration “targeting” Christians, one thing seems obvious:

We’re overdue for a public conversation about the severity — and the frequency — of the Trump administration's clashes with the faith community. www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddo...
Team Trump’s clashes with the faith community go from bad to worse
The political world is overdue for a conversation about the severity of the conflicts between the Republican administration and the faith community.

So yesterday a reporter asked Donald Trump about the writ of habeas corpus, and he had no idea what it was.

"I don't know," he said. "I'd rather leave that to Kristi."

Well, It turns out Sen. Hassan asked Kristi Noem about it in May, and this was Noem's response:
atrupar.com
HASSAN: What is habeas corpus?

NOEM: Habeas corpus is a constitutional right that the president has to be able to remove people from this country

HASSAN: That's incorrect

“Pope Leo XIV’s eyes grew misty Wednesday as an El Paso delegation led by Bishop Mark Seitz presented him letters and a video that captured the fears and anxieties of people facing mass deportation in the United States …”

The church “cannot be silent,” Pope Leo said.
jackjenkins.me
Oh — new reporting on Pope Leo from El Paso Matters, citing footage they have of yesterday's meeting.

Sounds like the pope was even *more* forceful in urging U.S. bishops to speak out about immigration than first reported.

I mean, that's…not subtle. elpasomatters.org/2025/10/08/e...
“I was struck at the beginning (of the video), it talks about the feeling of powerlessness, which I think is so much. I think it’s so important that we as a church give a message of hope in the midst of these horrible struggles, what’s going on in so many cities in the United States right now. At least the church cannot be silent,” the pope told the El Pasoans, according to a video of the meeting provided to El Paso Matters by Hope Border Institute.

Seitz responded: “You’ve spoken very strongly. We’re trying to do the same in our country and yet not get into the political fray the best that we can.”

Pope Leo told Seitz that he’d like to see the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops become more vocal on immigration issues.

“I mean, even within the conference, there are challenges. That’s one place they should be … I wish they were stronger in their own voice,” Leo said, adding that Archbishop Timothy Broglio, the president of the conference, should speak out more on immigration.

“There’s been some good movement in that sense, but I certainly intend to continue to encourage” U.S. bishops to address immigration, Leo said.

this is the thing, a lot of people visit portland, and they’re not all hyper progressives, people can see this shit with their own eyes and know they’re being lied to, that wasn’t the case in 2020 when everyone was stuck at home

I suspect even some MAGAs are becoming sceptical. Some of my super conservative relatives were in Portland this weekend, and they actually went to Powell's, walked around and ate Thai food. I didn't hear a single complaint about the city that's supposedly overrun with pyromaniac antifa gangs.

This is something that especially BlueSky people need to see. What Rev. Black has done is important, as well as the ministers and clergy who have been accompanying people to their court dates.

Yes, people actually believe in their faith and religions. It is not always a con and gives standing here.
djbyrnes1.bsky.social
Ellis highlights the attacks Reverend David Black has suffered at the Broadview facility, finding plaintiffs have sufficiently alleged that the feds' use of force against praying people "substantially burdens their excercise of religion."

Y’ALL TRIED TO END EMTALA’S CARE REQUIREMENTS FOR WOMEN BLEEDING OUT FROM THEIR PREGNANCIES IN HOSPITAL PARKING LOTS
atrupar.com
Mike Johnson: "If you're a young, pregnant American citizen women who shows up in an ER and you get treated and they pay the hospital less for treating you than some illegal rabble rouser who came in from some South American country to do us harm, that is wrong."

Can we please, just for one day, be united in our opposition?

Why, in the name of all that is holy, do we have to take this moment of uncertainty to just talk about Democrats?
chaplainjohn.medsky.social
But they did, especially with the Build Back Better act, which got folded into the IRA.

The challenge is that investing in GOP strongholds gave Biden no credit, and then the GOP used their propaganda to lie and say they did something they voted against.
chaplainjohn.medsky.social
It is really strange to see people on here belittle Democratic leaders and messaging on the same day that Gov. Pritzker is literally standing against Trump and naming the fascism.

Isn't it about time we stand together?

I was working an entire essay on this very notion this summer and this is reminding me I should pick it back up. TL;DR - every price is someone else's income and whether prices going down on something is "good" depends a whole lot on what you do for a living.
carlquintanilla.bsky.social
ANDREESSEN: Even if AI ends up destroying all the jobs, “the result would be hyper-deflation of prices, which is the thing that people miss. .. Things that today cost a lot of money will all of a sudden be cheap or free.”

We’re not dealing with brilliant strategists cleverly laying traps, we’re dealing with impulsive whiners whose advantage is contempt for laws, norms, and morality.

They’re not pulling some elaborate trick, they’re just willing—even eager—to do things regular, principled people consider off limits.

We keep saying we want better, we want a different world, yet we fight like hell when people give us hope or say things that break through the doomerism.

This world cannot change until we change. We cannot build community if we continually lash out at each other.

We have to work together.
chaplainjohn.medsky.social
Everyone, we have a problem here. Not just the Bluesky issues, but the fact that even when Democrats do everything we ask of them we pretend they are still enabling an abusive parent.

Then when someone tried to offer hope, they block us, like @lollardfish.bsky.social just did to me. For agreeing.

Besides the dozen people mentioned, Chicago mayor, who Trump just called to be arrested, Lander and Mamdani in NY, especially AOC. And even other Dems who don't do much normally are standing strong and fighting for healthcare, among many others.

How many of them doing what you ask would be enough?
chaplainjohn.medsky.social
Wow. They blocked me rather than responding.

Amazing how much courage and information they have.
chaplainjohn.medsky.social
Who the hell needs to "match the moment"? Your HCWs and people need help and can't afford basic Healthcare.

Healthcare is a LOT of good, especially now, with the plague, H5N1, Measles, and so much more.

Let me emphasize once again that if you’re inclined toward “no deal is possible with these guys” then trying to make a reasonable deal and getting this reaction demonstrates that far better than just asserting it and refusing to try would have.

Memes serve as a tool of dark participation and are used purposefully “to disrupt, undermine, attack, resist or reappropriate discursive positions pertaining to public affairs narratives in the news” (Peters & Allan, 2021, pp. 2–3)
chaplainjohn.medsky.social
And when the Democrats, like right now, are standing up snd choosing righteous justice, why do we continue to blame them anyway?

We are enabling the bad parent by our own actions.

When you could code silly quizzes on Facebook, it was FULL of "what would you be in medieval times?!" etc.

I made one that nearly always answered "died as a child", "died in childbirth", "lived and died as a servant"

People got SUPER mad with it.

Everyone assumes they'll be at the top of the tree
williamcarruthers.bsky.social
The subtext of ‘we should be more like Dubai’, beyond the obvious racism, is ‘I should have a servant’.
chaplainjohn.medsky.social
Why is your first instinct to blame Democrats for Republican evil?
