I thought it would be a good idea to switch the bibliography tool to biblatex+biber in our LaTeX template for students.
Apparently, the longer compilation time makes it impossible to use on the free-tier Overleaf. (Which I didn't think to check before rolling it out!)

My friend and colleague Remco Heesen once told me study of social epistemology of science made him "less trusting of any particular scientific paper but more impressed by science as a whole." I honestly think that's the right lesson to draw. But I think holding both attitudes doesn't come naturally.
The most important thing about science the public needs to remember is that the set of experimental and theoretical methods we refer to as "science" is the best, most reliable way of knowing we currently have.
It's rough around the edges but it works way better than anything else.

Watching people not realize this about his work, and then seeing it weaponized against climate policy, sent poor old Bruno Latour into a full-blown case of abyss gaze.

Where the fuck are backslash and curly brackets on the German keyboard again?
(For some reason Apple doesn't print third-level characters on their physical keyboards.)

The problem with most machine-based random number generators is that they’re not TRULY random, so if you need genuine randomness it is sometimes necessary to link your code to an external random process like a physical noise source or the current rate of US tariffs on a given country.

To me, “short messages from people you follow shown in chronological order” was very much the defining characteristic of Twitter. I find it an interesting (maybe Twitter-generational) divide that the “algorithmic” feed was so central to many people's perception of it.

See, maybe that's different for native speakers. But when I'm writing, at least 50% is paying attention to using the correct prepositions, finding good synonyms, and avoiding repetitions. Or I have to spread out these tasks over different iterations.
So much of the time I spend on writing is spent figuring out what I actually want to say, what the real point is, not just how to assemble words into a sentence.
I agree that much writing is busy work. But for me the writing process often refines my thinking, and I can't say the same for spelling.
