There is no good time for bad news and today is no different than any day in our recent time.

Nevertheless, I write this thread to chemistry faculty job seekers in the United States. #chemjobs #facultychemjobs #chemsky 🧪⚗️

my favorite Cal vs Stanford dunk is Cal pointing out that the periodic table contains Berkelium and Californium but no Stanfordium

(also Seaborgium, which is named after a Cal Nobel prize winner and is an anagram of Go Bears)
Graphic with Berkelium and Californium but still no “Stanfurdium”

For the record, it WAS clearly a laugh line - however she does NOT say "seriously"

This is an interesting question to ponder, ie what percentage of chemistry department faculty openings go to "non-chemists"? I imagine it's a minority and that it's gone up over the years.

one's more qualitative and one is more quantitative in terms of published scholarship?

First Contact followed the pattern of the even ones being good, and the odd ones being bad | also, I stopped watching Star Trek movies after "Nemesis"

An argument I heard was that TNG is an adventure series, not action. And making the films action movies was a mistake. But First Contact is the only TNG film worth a damn, imo.

And we had paper journals to read…like a book
That were passed around thru office mail
No Scifinder - CAS abstract service that only a few people could use, a library and copier machines
No PMC No outsourcing everything handmade

As in every year since 2013, I published my guess who will get the #nobelprize in #chemistry, to be announced next week.

This year I deviate from all other polls and predictions out there:
John Warner and Paul Anastas for formulating the concepts of Green Chemistry.

Today, I'm grateful for "Office Hours," a podcast supported by the Biomedical Engineering Society. Host Liz Wayne @lizwaynephd.bsky.social is doing tremendous work here. I especially enjoy the discussions surrounding why Liz and her guests have chosen careers in academia (1/2).

I made an UV filter for taking photos of red fluorescence in my corroles,so I can avoid the violet shine and have better sensitivity. Still needs some tweaking as it was somewhat opaque. But filters really well!
