We thank the editorial team and referees at @electoralstudies.bsky.social, excellent research assistants, and most of all the hundreds of experts that completed our surveys and helped generate this data set.
The paper is here: doi.org/10.1016/j.el...

The note further illustrates that these measures of horizontal accountability appear closely related to the transnational cleavage, as the party families at the pole of this divide (greens and the radical right) are also furthest from one another on the measure of horizontal accountability. 5/
chesdata.bsky.social
The 2024 CHES included for the first time questions to measure positions on executive constraints & judicial independence, key features of horizontal accountability. Here, the rad right party family stands out as much less likely to support constraints on executives & judicial independence 4/

We further report a sharp and sustained increase in the correlation between party positions on European integration and party stances on immigration, which indicates the emergence and durability of a transnational cleavage in European party politics. 3/
chesdata.bsky.social
Within the note we show that while the economic left-right positioning of the radical right party family has not shifted markedly to the left overall, the economic positioning of parties within the family has become more diverse over time. 2/

The CHES EU team has published a new research note in @electoralstudies.bsky.social describing some trends across the 25 years now covered by our trend file and exploring two new items included in the 2024 wave of the survey: doi.org/10.1016/j.el...

How much do Britons and political scientists - via @chesdata.bsky.social - agree on parties' place on the left-right spectrum?

Green: -55 Britons vs -59 experts
Labour: -36 vs -24
Lib Dems: -23 vs -23
Cons: +51 vs +53
Reform UK: +69 vs +85

Scale where -100 is very left and +100 is very right

The CHES is a survey of national party experts to place parties on political dimensions. It is generally considered the gold standard of comparative party research.
The new data has just come you. You can check it out with the link below. Big thank you to the team!

The @chesdata.bsky.social dataset is one of the most comprehensive sources on party ideology and positioning. It offers valuable insights into the evolution of political parties from 1999 (the first wave) to the present.

Europe's political parties in the new CHES data @chesdata.bsky.social at a glance: the political compass space. With apologies to Iceland, which didn't fit onto the chart

In this space, the party systems fall into two broad patterns

1) 🟦 vs 🟩

2) 🟥 vs 🟨

We will compile the 1999-2024 trend file soon, but in the meantime, you can merge with 1999-2019 now. In the 2024, we added several non-CHES variables into the regular dataset (vote share, family, etc.).

‼️ O, Canada is now in CHES!

The data include party position estimates for federal parties in Canada + parties in Ontario and Quebec. It's also super easy to combine with other @chesdata.bsky.social data to compare positions with positions of parties in other countries!

@chesdata.bsky.social is an interesting data source for information about political parties. I made a small quiz website with its data for the upcoming german election:
wahlquiz.de/ches/
When can I update it with 2024 data?

If you’re thinking about the upcoming German election, check out this data viz created by Tom Theile, which allows you to find which parties you’re closest to on several issues (based on CHES data): https://wahlquiz.de/ches/en.html

Note that EU support ranges from Euroskeptical (0) to pro-EU (6) and lrgen refers to the general left-right ideological dimension, ranging from 0 (left-wing) to 10 (right-wing).

The 2024 CHES survey is well on its way to finalizing, and we hope to release it soon after closing the survey. In a preliminary look of western Europe, notice the continued presence of the inverted U of EU support and left-right.

The inverted U persists in Western Europe.

Also, new @chesdata.bsky.social coming to a website near you (www.chesdata.eu) soon!!
