FF7 had a bad one too, you could hard lock before the demon wall… if you weren’t levelled enough it just was impossible (??) to beat and you had to restart the game if you didn’t backup save haha

i like when the randomness benefits me, and i like when it screws me over. i see players complain too about the latter, and it’s too bad that they’re unable to emotionally mature past it. it’s a great skill to have and makes the game more enjoyable by a long shot when you do

i also really like the amount of randomness, and it might be the main reason i’m sticking with the game. strategy gamers like determinism too much, i think how you deal with unfairness is an extremely interesting skill that strategy games tend to have, boringly, no interest in

a lot of the “problems” with the game design only seem to crop up at high MMR (2000+) but i’ve pretty much hit my cap at 1700 and the game is really great at that MMR, there is such a weird diversity of wonky strategies and play styles, it’s exciting and weird and good

there are so many tiny little things you can do, for one tiny example: split crawlers by having them walk through hounds to bolster them against arclights. there are just a zillion little things like this in the game and being clever and finding cost-effective counters to things is so so rewarding

still enjoying mechabellum. this game is such a rabbit hole and it’s definitely lining up to be one of my favorites. it is definitely my favorite strategy game

no zillion amounts of garbage realistic graphics or real time action combat could ever be this effective to me. they only drag me farther away from this fantasy and its humanity, and i would like to see more like it.

there’s all these little moments with the amazing sprite work. someone will say something and another character will cast them a glance, a handshake will be reluctant or a hug prolonged. the team had such confidence and respect for the sprites to be able to deliver the story effectively
