Thank you for thinking of me.

Also, that's creepy as hell.

It's desperately sad reading the NYT and National Post articles about Bob Munsch. Like many Canadians, not only did I grow up with his books but I got to hear him tell stories live.

Go hug your families, and read one of his books to your kids.

So the Met will use facial recognition at Notting Hill Carnival but not today? Fascinating.

She was mentioned on an episode of Horrible Science; I was SO excited to tell my son about her.

I once tried to explain pre decimal currency to one of my first years (she wasn't British) and all I could come up with was: 'you know how in Harry Potter they had weird money, British money was a bit like that.'

But but, it's a franchise-able IP!!! /s

As disjointed as it's gotten, Amazon will still run with it. MAYBE a young/in training Bond might work.

For me, more Le Carre/Cambridge 5 kinda stuff please.

🧵 oh, and my mum was the first person in her family to go to uni. After retirement, dad did a BA History for fun. My sis did an MA in Modern History. And me, well I'm only the second person in my family to get a PhD.

End of thread.

🧵 had a good career teaching hundreds of schoolkids before retirement.

The moral of the story: #alevel results don't define your entire life, and nontraditional paths to learning/success are valid. 5/

🧵 so she applied and got in to #SFU. Did a BA and teacher training, started working in primary schools. Discovered a passion for teaching math, started doing all sorts of experiential learning. Did an MA, then went mad and did a PhD. 4/

🧵 she moved to Canada, had me and my sister. Made extra $ typing up notes and essays fir local uni students (secretary skills!). One of them, who she was friends with until he died, said 'you're just as smart as all these students, why don't you apply ' 3/

🧵 she left school at 16, did the secretary thing. Still friends with her first boss.

But she wanted more, so she tried an A Level at night school while my dad (O Level in woodworking only) did his accountancy studies.

Mum failed, and gave up on education for decades. 2/

🧵 about #alevels, #results and exams in the UK.

My mum was working class, went to the type of secondary school where girls were encouraged to leave at 16 to train as secretaries. They saw her as the 'wrong sort', and made her do CSEs and barred her from O Levels. She fought and lost. 1/

Are you a black Scot? (either a native Scot or settled Scot) Or do you have friends who are black scots?

One of my phd students is doing research on black Scottish experiences and would love to interview you. If you're interested, could you drop me a message and I'll get some information to you.
