My mom used to say we came from a long line of women who pulled the plow-- I know she was saying that I could ignore the "delicate flower" role model. 💪

Given our Swiss side was middle class back to the 1300's, though, in retrospect I think she *might* have been overstating it. 😆

I was beginning to think a few years ago that I was getting too old and rickety to be assembling flat pack furniture -- my knees would complain or my back would go out from the up/down.

However, that is no longer true!! That time may come; but it is not today.

Yay for new kitchen furniture!! 😁💪🪛

oh yeah, I guess I've seen that in the newer shows! The older shows are still the older method. I hadn't noticed a new font but I did notice the signs interpretation was missing here and there, and the subtitle placement sometimes was hard to read against the background.

Their subtitles have gotten worse? Huh. I hadn't noticed. What was going wrong?

We got it!! "In the ARTEMIS project, we will address a critical clinical challenge - to develop novel strategies to identify who is at risk for making a suicide attempt, with enough time to potentially enact a life-saving intervention." (quoting my MPI)

I was thinking that when the goal is not to make lots of money but to shove information into people's brains, so they can think about neuroscience -- admittedly I'm not doing it on a large scale, but from an artisanal point of view, it's easy to see progress every week.

Which is pretty satisfying.

Explaining to one lab member about the brain as a prediction engine; to a second about artifacts in T1 images; and a third about why aging is an important covariate in schizophrenia analyses; plus really having to THINK about experimental design, today--

I love it, but I'm tuckered. 😂

Good morning. Another gorgeous early Autumn day. Empathy is not a defect.
“The fact is, when we support others, we ourselves are actually being supported; when we help others, we ourselves are actually being helped. This is the worldview of “dependent origination” taught in Buddhism.” Daisaku Ikeda

Binge watching Ouran Host Club this weekend because it was That Sort of Week. #anime

I watched it 10 years ago and it is just as silly and sweet as I remembered. ❤️
I did like this, "If you want to please girls, be a host. If you want to please THE girl, be a man." (I.e., authentic, not a trope) 😀

Colorado's Wild Horse Inmate Program (WHIP) will end after 30 years, as feds cut funding. Inmates tamed wild horses using an approach approved by animal scientist Temple Grandin.

100 animals to be relocated, 5 state employees reassigned. Reporting shows some of these horses went to border patrol.

Interesting times with an aging dad... I may be offline a good bit as I process things.

We are now in the phase of project management where most of my time is spent reading emails, acting on the ones I need to and snoozing the rest until a later day in the week... 😜

One of my favorite moments in the history of free speech: Larry Flynt publishing a satirical Campari ad featuring Jerry Falwell Sr. as an incestuous drunk who first had sex with his mother in an outhouse. Falwell sued. In a unanimous decision, the Supreme Court found that satire is protected speech.

"Homan indicated he would facilitate securing contracts for them in exchange for money once he was in office...

"On Sept. 20, 2024, with hidden cameras recording the scene at a meeting spot in Texas, Homan accepted $50,000 in bills..."

Tom Homan was investigated for accepting $50,000 from undercover FBI agents. Trump's DOJ shut it down.
The FBI and Justice officials closed the investigation, which a Justice Department appointee had called a “deep state” probe in early 2025.

It seems like none of your moderators are accepting new people since some time in 2024--is this still a list that is open to new scientists?

I am coming around to the view that at least some of the work at this point is to find ways to create (however imperfectly) a microcosm of our vision for the future in our everyday lives.

Which is a big transition for me as someone who long held contempt for what I saw as lifestyle activism
