About two dozen Fulcrum Fitness members and supporters, dressed in neon leotards, striped knee socks and flashy sneakers, staged a peaceful ’80s-themed aerobics demonstration they called “Sweatin’ Out the Fascists.” The workout began around 1 p.m. and lasted about an hour. Participants took turns leading the group through synchronized movements to a loud retro soundtrack. A few carried protest signs throughout. At one point, a counterprotester wheeled over a stereo system and blasted competing music, briefly drowning out the aerobics soundtrack. Neighbors, passersby and livestreamers stopped to watch or record. Federal officers remained on the rooftop across the street. Later in the afternoon, officers fired several pepper balls at the pavement near the ICE gate to push people back from the property. The Fulcrum Fitness group continued its routine without incident. Demonstrations at the South Portland facility have continued for months and grew after President Donald Trump’s Sept. 27 declaration to send troops to what he called “War ravaged Portland.” The night before the aerobics protest, federal officers again fired pepper balls when protesters stepped onto ICE property. Portland police were present and intervened in a separate confrontation involving a conservative livestreamer. Officers arrested 41-year-old Travis Juhr on suspicion of criminal mischief.
