Statements like this from prominent politicians can have a much more positive effect than someone constantly yelling about the Hannibal Directive whenever Oct 7 is brought up.
christiaanptr.bsky.social
There’s some real virtue signaling going on in the comments here.

Of course Oct 7 did not happen in a vacuum, and of course decades of prior oppression led to that day.

But, this is still a statement, from the leading candidate in the largest U.S. city, that centers the ongoing genocide in Gaza.

My statement on the two year anniversary of October 7, 2023.
“Two years ago today, Hamas carried out a horrific war crime, killing more than 1,100 Israelis and kidnapping 250 more. I mourn these lives and pray for the safe return of every hostage still held and for every family whose lives were torn apart by these atrocities.

In the aftermath of that day, Prime Minister Netanyahu and the Israeli government launched a genocidal war: adeath toll that now far exceeds 67,000; with the Israeli military bombing homes, hospitals, and schools into rubble. Every day in Gaza has become a place where grief itself has run out of language. I mourn these lives and pray for the families that have been shattered. Our government has been complicit through it all.

This must end. The occupation and apartheid must end. Peace must be pursued through diplomacy, not war crimes, and our government must act to end these atrocities and hold those responsible to account.

These last two years have demonstrated the very worst of humanity. We must answer it by modeling the very best: a relentless pursuit of our higher ideals and an unwavering commitment to universal human rights.”

Funny thing is, it’s not even world building he loved. It was language creation.

LotR and The Hobbit were sort of a demonstration of his theory that languages needed myths and legends.

The stories were just there to prop up his language creation!
On tolkien's Writing: Myth vs. Language (20.06.14
by Lesley Vos) - 2 Comments
Translated from Greek, "a myth" means
"a word". J. R. R. tolkien's understanding of the relationship between a word (language) and a myth is based on the statement that a language gives rise to mythology.
Tolkien did not address this issue explicitly and we can reconstruct his ideas only from his fragmentary observations in articles and letters. This situation arises because
Tolkien
dedicated far less attention to theoretical research than he did to practical language creation and myth making.
Moreover, myth making was for him a secondary phenomenon, while language creation was a primary one. Tolkien always emphasized the fact that myths followed languages. He was a linguist fist of all, although today most fans knew him only as a writer.

Coates’s line in his discussion with Klein that “sometimes we lose” really stuck with me.

Klein was talking electoral calculations. Coates was talking about those working for true liberation and equality.

To me, this is so much of the difference. Where are we actually trying to go? And how?

Idk, man, if it’s easier for you to speak in Saudi Arabia than in the U.S. that might be a you problem

A lot of people making fun of Kennedy for blaming autism on Tylenol but en serio, how many of you talk disparagingly about autistic folks? because there’s a lot of “oh yeah he doesn’t know better because he’s autistic“ like it’s brain damage or something rather than a literal expression of diversity

I told OpenAI's Sora to make a video showing "Body cam footage of cops arresting a dark skinned man in a department store." It took less than a minute.

I don’t care what anybody says, this discussion of IShowSpeed’s name is peak journalism

Yeah, that makes sense. He’s also played all but one of the RC games this year, and I wonder if that was initially the plan.

Damn, I forgot it was 5… a bit strange, then. I’d feel like, of all the guys, having his 100th in SA makes the most sense. But maybe they’d prefer it to be against a top team!
christiaanptr.bsky.social
It’s his 98th test, isn’t it? Would just be a bit surprised if they do his 100th as an away game.

A bit surprised to see Siya play this one. Means he’ll probably sit one of either Ireland or France?

I think the Trump admin assumed no one would try to find out who the people on the boats they blew up really were

Dear God, somebody help this child!
A screenshot of an AI generated video with child pointing at the smiley face on a Wallmart “Rollback” sign as the front part of a shopping cart juts out from his midrif.

Terrifying stuff.

Nah, pretty sure Gunn has confirmed it’s supposed to be a Swastika, to foreshadow the plot twist that happened last week.

One thing I miss about Rugby Twitter is the annual “Rugby vs American Football” argument with the obligatory Eben and Jonah Lomu references.
Awful Announcing (@awfulan..):
Joe Davis: "I just happened upon a rugby game (in Ireland). My jaw dropped watching these dudes pummel each other..."
Greg Olsen: "Why don't you tell everybody what they told you they refer to American football as?"
Davis: "I don't think I can use that word." #NFL
(This is followed by a video of Roger Goodell sitting next to some Irish Rugby players)

Errr, except they do.

Here's a 6' 8" 260lb one for starters...

Still can't believe it's been 9yrs since we lost one of the greatest athletes in world sports history.
6'5" tall, 120kgs (265lbs / 19 stone) and could run the 100m sprint in 10.70 seconds.
On top of all this he was extremely humble.
RIP Jonah Lomu 💔
