I’m sorry, there’s a Republican named *Heath* *Flora*? Is his wife named Erica? Does he have a daughter named Manzanita, a son named Huck?

…and there’s this thing called Section 404(b)(1) of the Clean Water Act.

Anyway, I work on this too much to dive deep on social media, but my point is that there are real tradeoffs between different approaches.

Newly published research indicates that poor water quality can drastically affect air quality—an observation with important implications for global waterways.

Large portions of the existing alignment are very low in the tidal frame and are vulnerable to storm surges under existing conditions, this vulnerability will increase as sea levels continue to rise.

That’s the “purpose and need” CalTrans describes for the proposed project in its environmental documents; I’m not making a value judgment.

Gonna be thinking about this lede for a minute.
(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray.

“I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.”

But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire.

“We could hear them laughing,” Black said.

It’s not just further along, it has a different project purpose - flood risk reduction vs congestion relief.

There has been discussion of eventually co-locating SMART rail on the causeway. One of the open questions is where the eastern rail segment would route - along the existing alignment through Schellville/Suscol or along 37 and through Mare Island. Both have major and different constraints.

My in-laws are in Penn Valley (a little down the hill from Grass Valley) and I get so nervous for that whole corridor every summer/fall.

I’m curious because I’ve heard anecdotes that this is becoming an issue in west Sonoma County, but I don’t have any hard evidence. I’m real curious about the Sierra foothills as well.

Is there any evidence that this is beginning to impact home prices in areas of CA where the fair plan is increasingly the primary insurer?

in the conifer-dominated forests. I’m sure folks are looking at this, but I’m not up on the literature.

That’s interesting, because when I drive up Mark West Rd, all the regrowth I see is crazy-dense burl regrowth from bay laurel, live oak, etc under burned (dead) Doug fir and (regreening) redwood. I wonder if the successional communities in the mixed hardwood-conifer forests differ from those >

I’m this person in my friend group - my parents were pretty strict about what we could watch growing up, and in adulthood I just find myself prioritizing time for other things (nature, live music, books). I miss a lot of cultural references, but that’s what social media’s for!
