I have two presentations tentatively scheduled for Monday January 26 at the @ametsoc.org Annual Meeting:

1. Grounded in Facts: Debunking Lightning Lore (11:00 am)
2. 2026 FIFA World Up Lightning Risk Assessment (1:45 pm)
Flash Quiz:
Was the new world record lightning flash a single 515 mile bolt?

Are positive lightning strokes stronger than negative lightning strokes?

If you're caught outside during a thunderstorm, should you crouch down?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, this presentation is for you!

We're going to review some of the lightning myths that continue to proliferate and show you the science of whether they're true or not. Become the lightning expert at your station and be better prepared to talk about lightning the next storm season. The 2026 FIFA World Cup soccer tournament will take place in 16 cities across the United States, Canada, and Mexico between June 11 and July 19. Forty-eight teams will be competing across a total of 104 matches during the peak of North American lightning season. The maximum attendance of all games could approach eight million fans, if every game at every stadium is filled to maximum capacity. Eleven of the 16 venues are open air venues, while four have retractable roofs, and one has a roof with open sides.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup has the potential to be the largest sporting event of all-time, but also one of the largest lightning-risk events of all-time. Using data from the National Lightning Detection Network and Global Lightning Dataset GLD360, we review the amount of lightning detected within 10 miles of each FIFA World Cup venue during the months of June and July between 2016 and 2025. This 10-year lightning climatology will highlight the peaks of lightning risk during the tournament and can inform lightning safety decision-making.
