found my old artist statement for my capstone project and. oh my god oh my god wait I was onto something. holy shit
A paper with an artist statement that reads: “Artist Starement: Working in illustration, I confront and make sense of the loss of a partner, of childhood, and of identity. In doing so, I explore the dissonant relationships between experience, memory, lived sensation, and image. “Vestige” is my eulogy to my late partner, Christopher Jones. In a triptych of three illustrations, I trace three different memories of us holding hands, one for each image. In recalling these memories, however, I realize I cannot perfectly picture the environment or the placement of our hands, only the lingering sensation of our touch. Each recollection deteriorates with repetition, time, and age; I am simultaneously terrified and fascinated that I could lose him all over again, if only my memory and experience of him. Because the act of recalling is an automatic and iterative process, a complementary process is vital to this work’s conception and reading. I translate the three memories into digital illustrations which are then printed onto large format paper and traced over multiple times in both marker and colored pencil. No two tracings are alike. The act of recalling memories is analogous to this illustrative process, where inconsistency and entropy emerge in the relationships between memories. The tangibility of these images serves as a substitute for these experiences, a quiet comment on my inevitable loss of him and the memories I have of him.”
