Steam always has general maintenance on Tuesdays, and the store almost always goes down. It’s kinda surprising more people don’t know this imo!

The latest game pass hikes and rumors of Xbox leaving the market- you don’t really need to be an insider to see what’s happening.

The question is, are these hardware and subscription price hikes the moves of a company that intend to stay in the hardware biz for the next 20/10/5 years? No way. 🧵

For sure, I think the rumored Steam console would be a pretty perfect replacement to catch some of the Xbox userbase. But I also wonder how many will just leave the space altogether in favor of PC or mobile. Like how many Xbox users are just Fortnite/Minecraft/Roblox players?

I think we’re all waiting for a Sega style announcement of Xbox leaving the hardware space. That won’t ever happen. But I think it’s pretty clear what is happening, right now.

I think the biggest eye opener for MS was when they sold hundreds of thousands of premium early access copies of Forza 5 to PS5 owners. Early access to a game released years ago. It’s free money. PS5 owners actually buy games. What a concept. But maybe it was death by a thousand paper cuts.

Now I imagine we’ll see something new hooked up to a TV with an Xbox brand in 2030. The rumored PC hybrid seemed plausible before all of this happened. But it feels less like an Xbox pivot and more like the Atari and Activision brands of today. Just like the ROG Ally X.

Look at the difference with Sony, who is rumored to switch to lower capacity hard drives in PS5s just to keep the price the same. They want to keep growing the PS base. Price hikes are deadly poison for growth. I’m sure they saw it the last time they raised prices.

The price increases for hardware are another avenue for a trillion dollar company to instead take the losses for a $299 Xbox to maintain growth, but they see no value for growing the Xbox base because there is no Xbox next gen. So we get insane price increases to hardware instead that make no sense.

If you don’t have hardware, game pass turns into a streaming only service, or a PC only service- a dramatic departure from what it is now. So the time to make profit with what they offer now is limited. Boost profit and don’t worry about growth until the next evolution of game pass is necessary.

The sub increase for game pass was insane- a massive amount that could have been done over the course of 1-2 years to lessen the impact. That’s only true if you had infinite time for growth. If Xbox’s last hardware gen is this one, they only have 3-4 years before game pass is radically changed.
