Not quoting or attributing because I think the "oh yay it's xmas"/"oh no it's xmas" divide really IS just harmless fun as much as anything can be, but I really dislike this particular take. I'm not against the idea that some sort of silicon intelligence *might* arise at some point--we're not even nearly there as far as I can tell--but humans are SO programmed to regard things that do not have human agency as if they do have human agency, that this seems like a necessary move
my most butlerian jihad coded belief is that we should probably make it illegal – and more importantly, we should work toward a cultural consensus that it is immoral – to design a computer program whose interface uses the first person

You need to believe that everything someone says might have truth in it. Even and especially your enemies, because otherwise you leave yourself open to them using your reaction to discredit you to their allies, just by telling you something true but misleading or unbelievable.

People like to act like in being opposed to the concept of blocking I'm opposed to personal safety online.
I'm not. I just think that when the systems in place offer one and only one tool for your protection and say "just use this whenever you're uncomfortable", that MAYBE this isn't the best idea
