I ended up evacuating...been years, so memory may be faulty, but I think the drive started...fifteen hours, I think, before landfall. We had the "bestie, no, the models say no" convo that morning or afternoon. Had to wait on a paycheck so I had the gas to leave.

I wasn't out in the Mid-Atlantic for Sandy, but my life is like...an extended road trip thru all the natural hazards.

An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.

I remain forever grateful my landlady my first year in Louisiana heard how I said New Orleans and just shut that shit down before I embarrassed her. 😂

And a reminder, abortion training isn’t just for providing abortions, it’s also for managing miscarriages and pregnancy complications. There’s already a lack of providers able to do those procedures.

I did shelter in place *once* during a major hurricane because I had no options, my weather radio died and I had to lean on patchy cell signal to follow local broadcast mets + nws. One of the scariest experiences of my life.
cirruswx.bsky.social
I switched around my evacuation time based on bestie's forecast (mets are good besties!) and avoided: road that washed out/collapsed and ate some cars, tornadoes, being trapped in what used to be my apartment.

My car would have just gone plunk into the muddy hole.
cirruswx.bsky.social
The route I'd originally planned on got beat to hell a bit after landfall by the heavy rains, I would have had no way of knowing I was headed into a washed out road that was swallowing cars.

Shop called, so far they can't reproduce the gas leak from yesterday. One of the mechanics will drive the car around a second time, and see if it's induced at the pump. Idk, I have no idea.

Yooooooooooooooooo.

Gonna do a book.
Journalist, podcast creator, and Punk Planet founder Dan Sinker's I HATE THOSE MASKED BASTARDS!: Terror, Truth, and the Editor Who Took on the Klan, a narrative account of crusading journalist George Dale, who faced off against a powerful, ascendant Klan movement in 1920s Indiana, and who serves as a model of journalistic integrity and defiance in the face of fascism, to Eric Kerl and Katy O'Donnell at Haymarket, at auction, by David Patterson at Stuart Krichevsky Agency (NA).

I didn't die during a hurricane evacuation because a bestie I knew from social media guided me over the phone to adjust my route.

One of the more incredible stories out of LA this year has been how a taco review blog became the best on-the-ground coverage of ICE raids in the city.

They do a dispatch every day, follow-up on the kidnapped people (which almost no media outlet has done), and fact-check government claims.

It’s crazy how Keynes was right about basically everything and we’re still holding our dicks in our hands almost a century later because we let Reaganism/Thatcherism win

Damn. This is amazing. £325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy:
www.citizensinformation.ie/en/employmen...
Post from Threads user rodneyowl: "Ireland has declared the Basic Income for Artists scheme permanent. This will be officially announced in tomorrow’s budget. Details to follow. Congratulations to all who fought for it and the present and future artists of all sorts in Ireland. That includes me 👌We’re just comin to the end of a 3 year pilot scheme. It’s been a roaring success. For every €1 paid out to the 2000 participants, the government got €1.46 back. Can’t argue with that. Other countries are already taking note."

Yes, the way we teach this stuff makes it seem like we can win by memes & PR stunts. I only recently learned the peace activists burning draft records weren't just making a symbolic statement. The draft board didn't have copies - every file destroyed was a man who'd never be called up to war.
