Gwadaloop. Mom and I both mimic accents without trying, but that was one she bucked the habit on. She loves Spanish and hates French, so she’s fine with Louisiana ones like laffy-et. But she tends to do Spanish names correct to Spanish.

I used to cringe inside when my mom came to visit me in Austin and insisted on pronouncing Guadalupe correctly. It’s a main road, I lived near it a few years I lived there.

I’ve also said gore, and am very glad to have been right. My mom lived in Waterville, ME for a while as a kid, so I might have learned from her? And I think it gets mentioned as where Stephen King lived, so we might have heard it that way, too.

We’ve got those here, too. I doubt we pronounce them correctly for their own languages, but mangling foreign language place names is how locals establish themselves. My fluent Spanish speaker mom refused to pronounce Guadalupe the way locals in Austin did. She did it correctly, I said gwad-a-loop.

For southern Louisiana in general, Lafayette, Grand Isle, and New Orleans. New Orleans can also serve to place where locals are from.

I don’t have much of an accent, but I sound like I’m from here when I say Grand Isle because I heard of it from friends before I ever knew how to spell it.

I warned mom’s carer that if Teddy is staring at something, there’s probably something alive in it, having learned from opening the stove exhaust he was staring at and having a lizard fall out. Ditto the kitchen ceiling light.

I am very grateful that Teddy has only brought live, giant flying roaches to his cat friends, and not to us humans. He is a very generous friend and the roaches he brought provided much entertainment for his friends. Mom and I are unbothered by roaches by now so we were fine being spectators.
