Yesterday I wanted to show the students how many social security hearings there are in an average year. Today I wanted to show two VAERS reports to explain how they look. I do have a class on disinformation and do include current events, but these were for specific things.

How antivaccine groups mislead people, #4694: the actual report said the CDC performed well, but suggested improvements; the CHD article misrepresented it by saying it fumbled safety, which the report did not say or imply.

Is anyone else having trouble using government sites right now? Yesterday I tried to use SSA and it did not work in the morning (though it worked later) . Today CDC wonder isn’t working. I am trying to use these in teaching.

I used to work in the adolescent health setting and I was surprised at the number of patients who told me they had engaged in sexual relations at school, often during lunch. I’ll yield that that’s unlikely to be the primary reason/motivation for an HPV vaccine mandate, but it does occur. 3/3

For example, most states require HepB vaccination for school attendance, despite HBV being primarily blood-borne and very unlikely to be transmitted in schools.

I think the issue poses two questions

1. Is a school vaccine mandate strictly for the prevention of infection transmission at school? No, not exclusively. School vaccine mandates are (I think) more accurately the means for encouraging community vaccination levels 1/3

That’s a really bad argument for teens in school. You’re saying they took the risk themselves, so there’s no need to require protection. But we impose a lot of things on teens to protect them from risks they may choose because they’re not adults.

If teens have sex in school, which does happen, they’re unlikely to know the HPV status of the other person, so thinking they consented to that risk is tricky.

The assumption is that it would be rare.

Their version of IC is to greatly overemphasize small risks while ignoring or downplaying benefits.

The shared part is just giving space for anti-vaxers to get their hooks into people.

And if you use this approach towards childhood vaccines, you will exacerbate the Trump/Kennety outbreaks.
