Reminds me of the Beckett quote (though I had to quickly Google it): "habit is the ballast that chains the dog to his vomit".

Could well be, I've no idea. It's not like they come across as nice charming people who you feel ought to be sympathetic to…

If you think about the 'but how is it funded' stuff Labour were constantly subject to in opposition, never mind now, it's hard to feel that the same rules really apply.

I find the write-up Badenoch's speech is getting amazing. There was an earnest discussion on #bbc5live that seemed to take the stamp duty policy (such as it is) almost entirely at face value, which didn't seem to happen with anything at the Labour conference last week.

"A high point of her leadership of the party so far" says Chris Mason, (having said the Conservatives and the leader are in a difficult situation & have felt marginalised)

All these people really want is to pay no taxes and be treated with floor scraping deference. Everything else is just bullshit in pursuit of that goal.

Party donor Nick Candy says "I cherish the values we grew up with here in the West. But today you are more likely to find the values we grew up with in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.’

Excellent letter from the Bishop of Birmingham to Robert Jenrick.

At a time when so many other voices have been silent, the bishops have been admirably outspoken against attempts to stir up division.

The churches do a lot of community cohesion work & do not want to see this trashed for party gain.

The Bishop of Birmingham has written to the Shadow Justice Secretary Robert Jenrick about his comments about Handsworth

Yep – the comparators for Leeds (or Sheffield, or Newcastle, or Manchester) are not London but cities across Europe.

The American use of likely does my head in.

Serious point: Burnham is not the spokesperson for northerners or 'the north' and it's odd when people, in London, say, take him as such.

Losing battle, that one, I think.

That's Manchester, I wouldn't know. ;-)

The other one is people objecting to city centre housing because 'it's all for students' or 'it's not for families', but then don't like students/single people living in HMOs or – horror of horrors – entire houses in their area.

I don't think people in Leeds blame nurses in Tower Hamlets *at all*, even rhetorically, though I'm a Sheffielder so can't really speak for them.

The only thing I know about him really was the story about him requiring kumquats if he did a book signing, which I was told by staff in the bookshop I once worked in. (Apparently this is true, but also some elaborate in-joke only his readers understand.)

Am wondering if all of those suddenly deciding they’re against communities living “parallel lives” might reconsider their support of religious schools? Or indeed private ones?

As Andy Street said in response.

Ah, good, much as I disagree with him on many things, I'm glad he's still sticking his head above the parapet.

Handsworth is the epitome of this.

Jenrick: We want all people to be living side by side. We can't have particular communities in this country where there's a heavy preponderance of one group or another. We want people to be living in mixed communities, don't we?

What's the qualifying population density of any one group, Honest Bob?

I mean, Handsworth is the epitome of that.

Talking to people in Handsworth you discover people of different faiths and ethnicities working closely together. Politicians need to say "how can I help?", not criticise. The idea you can walk around and see the colour of people's skin and work out what's going on is a racist delusion.
Jenrick defends calling Handsworth 'worst-integrated'
The shadow justice secretary stands by his comments about the Birmingham area amid sharp criticism.
