So much has gone wrong in US press reporting on Trump because the White House reporters are people who have exclusively covered US politics.

They need people who have worked in Hungary, Turkey, etc. The relevant knowledge isn't Reagan factoids; it's the dynamics of competitive authoritarianism.

Serious scholars have examined what happens when we change the number of H1-B visas issued.

Cities that get more H1-B immigrants subsequently see the wages of natives *rise* substantially.

Skilled immigrants bring new ideas, fill labor shortages and make us all more productive.

A $100k “price” for H1-B visas is like a tariff on STEM labor.

And the first rule of tariffs is clear: never tax your inputs — that just makes American firms less competitive than their foreign competitors.

However, bullies pick targets they they can mercilessly crush in public to create a climate of fear in everyone else. If you are picked as that target (ie., they gang up on you), you can’t resist alone.

The answer is collective action. (Eg., see @stephenking.bsky.social ‘s writings 😊)

Think of an economy as like baking a cake. H1-B visas exist so that if you're out of a specific ingredient, you can Instacart it and keep baking. Add a $100k delivery charge and you'll choose to:
1. Quit baking; or
2. Use an inferior recipe; or
3. Import cake instead of making it
