We need to pick up this Overton Window and throw it as far as we can. Stop waiting for shit to “be popular” and start advocating for what is transparently right.

this is all to say that should democrats win the house and senate this november, they should hold similarly dramatic — which is to say televised and highly publicized — hearings on the conduct of ICE and CBP, with testimony from victims. we want as much of *this* as possible in the record. (3/?)
ICE detained Arlit Maria Martinez on her way to work. 2 days later, her 15 yo son died of cancer. They wouldn't let her out to say goodbye. The family had planned to move back to Mexico prior to the cancer diagnosis but stayed for his treatment. Now, Mr Martinez has lost his wife to ICE & his son.
Teen dies of cancer days after mother arrested by ICE: ‘She’s never gonna see him’
The mother's family pleaded with federal officers for her release from custody to say her final goodbyes to her son, but their requests went unanswered.

thomas chatterton williams, whose main literary output is three memoirs of declining quality, and who has written the same essay ad nauseam for 10 years, nonetheless has a sinecure at the atlantic, a teaching job at an elite college, and a nice handful of prestigious fellowships

Definitely, though I will say to be fair that getting mad is a reasonable visceral reaction to a guy trying to tell you “things are pretty good right now actually” in this climate, esp when there’s already a lack of consensus on basic definitions and how to interpret the data.

Yeah I think that discrepancy in our understanding of what “gig” worker means is why many folks are disagreeing w/Matt, esp since he’s using this cws data to make the claim that “gig work is slightly less prevalent now than the 1990s”, when, like you pointed out, ride-share employment has grown.

Okay maybe I’m illiterate (likely!) but pretty sure they’re saying that the cws did ask questions about app-based employment but they’re *not* including it in the cws news release and that they only plan on publishing those estimates *separately* in the future.

I mean I get what you’re saying and I don’t agree with the “surveys are unscientific” statement, but the survey in question is actually just very flawed in that it doesn’t include app-based work. Matt appears to ignore this criticism in the og thread and deflecting by arguing with these strawmen.

Vance: “Like Ancient Rome, our nation is in a post-republican period. The true volk are crying out for a Caesar. I’m ready.”

Rubio: “Please, I just want to bomb Venezuela.”

the idea is that moral clarity or certainty is somehow dangerous. of course, everyone who argues this is also morally certain, just about different things. this is just a way of devolving the debate into abstraction.

legitimately i think one of the core failings of centrist pundits is that they have come to define themselves by what they are against--to chart their intellectual course by who they think is being annoying this week--instead of by recourse to genuine principle

the thing everyone is going to have to accept is that the post-trump period, whenever it comes, will not and cannot be a project of national unity, it must be a project of partisan project of renewal, in the same way that reconstruction and the new deal were partisan projects of renewal.
