"Many of the CEOs I spoke with didn’t care about democracy per se. For them, democracy wasn’t a moral good. It was a source of volatility. What they wanted was stability... "

But "The evidence is overwhelming: countries that weaken democracy do not gain more stability and security, they lose it."
The Illusion of Order:
Business leaders think a little autocracy might bring stability. History and data say the opposite.

WaPo really doing Trump’s bidding this morning. Headlines about veterans defrauding the VA, and Jay Jones sending violent texts. I’ll stick to @popular.info, @democracydocket.com , @the-downballot.com and @thebulwark.com.

JUST IN: The Republican Mayor of Fairbanks, Alaska’s second biggest city, lost re-election last night to a Democrat.

Mayor David Pruhs is a conservative who fought protections for LGBTQ+ residents; he made comments this year drew condemnation this year from Alaska Natives. He lost to Mindy O'Neall.

Letting the health care tax credits expire would devastate American families — and we’re making that crystal clear by giving you the data.

We’ve built graphics showing how much costs would rise in every GOP district.

Let’s start with Mike Johnson (R-LA):

CNN: Trump sending troops is unpopular, they don’t buy his argument that it’s about crime, he’s also underwater on immigration… and 🇺🇸 know he’s raising prices not lowering them.

1. Federal agents from ICE and other agencies are wrongly detaining U.S. citizens, sometimes detaining them for days, on suspicion that they are undocumented immigrants.

The raids are done without search warrants or other procedures designed to protect civil liberties.
How federal agents are terrorizing American citizens
Last week, hundreds of heavily armed federal agents descended on an apartment complex in Chicago, arriving in Black Hawk helicopters and moving trucks.

I was a skeptic about the import of the Epstein files.

But 3 invasions of cities, one military buildup outside Venezuela, a government shutdown, and so many other things meant to distract have me convinced whatever’s in there is the biggest presidential scandal in U.S. history.

We must now start calling this what it is: Trump’s Invasion. It started with federal agents, it will soon include deploying federalized members of the Illinois National Guard against our wishes, and it will now involve sending in another state’s military troops.

They’re using American tax dollars to fund infrastructure in Argentina because that’s where they’re all going to flee when we kick them out of office

After announcing a $20 billion bailout of Argentina, the White House now says it's pausing $18 billion in funding for NYC infrastructure projects

Lots of folks are self-censoring now. You just can’t observe it.

100% agree. Just stating what I see re: American public opinion on this.
claireadida.bsky.social
Part of it may be the conflation of “immigration” and “the border”. Data consistently show Trump is still net positive on the border.

TBH, it isn’t unpopular enough.

There is a mistaken impression in Democratic circles that Trump's invasion of our cities and trampling of our rights and freedoms is popular. It isn't:

Imagine if Biden had tried to federalize the Texas National Guard to halt Operation Lone Star, perhaps by claiming Texas was engaged in "rebellion."

Would a single legal commentator on the right have claimed that decision was unreviewable? I just fundamentally do not believe they would.

The very first statute authorizing domestic use of the military during domestic emergencies, enacted in 1792 by a Congress full of the same folks who wrote and ratified the Constitution, expressly provided for judicial review in certain circumstances *before* the President could even send troops.

This is around the 3500 block of West Armitage.

New in PN: Lessons from a Red Scare

No monthly jobs report because of the shutdown. Makes it easier to lie about the economy. Americans losing their jobs are probably just imagining things.
