Curious about tick virology? Read my latest piece in @uk.theconversation.com where I explain findings of my latest research article www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Hope it will helps people to understand the importance of studying tick and their pathogens #ScienceforAll #WomenInScience #Arbovirose

Really enjoyed working with MSc Science Communication student Hannah to produce this video as part of her summer project. It's a great opportunity to look at science from a different perspective. Great work Hannah!

🦟 Dengue, a mosquito-borne disease, is expected to rise in a warming world.

This video by MSc student Hannah Stephens explores how #dengue transmission may shift with climate change and how innovative research could help control it.

It's been a busy few weeks welcoming pupils from various schools to visit us on campus. Last week we had pupils testing out our Disease Diagnostic Virtual Reality app, while this week pupils have joined us in the teaching lab to learn about infectious microorganisms

A pupil in a white polo shirt looks down a microscope in a molecular biology lab. There are blue poster boards behind them with information about different parasites and other microorganisms Two pupils in blue school jumpers stand in front of a suspended computer monitor showing a microbiological safety cabinet in virtual reality. One of the pupils wears a headset and holds a controller in each hand while the other watches what they are doing on the screen

My colleagues are just awesome! Today @nicolaveitchuofg.bsky.social presented her work on EDI in UG education on behalf of the UofG team and collected an EDI award from the @microbiologysociety.org
On the dark stage illuminated with strong lights are two podiums with one person at each. Presenter is on the right and chair on he left. The slide behind them reads 'Embedding equality diversity and inclusion into Biosciences undergraduate curricula though staff-student partnerships'

I recently had a clear out and rediscovered my @cvrinfo.bsky.social public engagement t- shirt. So I wore it to yoga. Does that count as outreach?!

First session of the semester in the UofG Multiuser VR suite. Today we welcomed students on the @uofgsii.bsky.social @uofgmvls.bsky.social Diagnostic Technologies and Devices masters course. They are learning how to diagnose a viral infection using qPCR in VR
Students stand on mats around the edge of a wooden panelled room. They are wearing VR headsets and holding controllers. On the computer monitor you can see the VR lab they are working in.

“It is really hard for infectious diseases to effectively stop being specialists and move over into a new species. So, when that happens, it is striking and concerning” — Microbiology Society member, Ed Hutchinson, in an important article published in the Guardian yesterday -
Age of the panzootic: scientists warn of more devastating diseases jumping between species

This is so lovely!! What an awesome idea to think creatively about your work. And even better to do it as a team 😀

One of the nice things about teaching so late in the Semester is having the pick of teaching spaces. For our final session of the year we're in one of the awesome @uofgasbs.bsky.social active learning spaces. Added bonus of checking out how the construction of our new lab building is going 🏗️👷‍♀️🦺
A classroom set up with small tables for group work. The wall is glass and outside there are construction vehicles visible

Do you want to become a virologist?
The @CVRinfo PhD programme is now recruiting for both UK and international applicants - rotate in two labs then choose a project tailored to your interests.
Also you get to live in Glasgow, which is fab.
Please RT!

Hello Bluesky 👋 I love teaching and public engagement. Today I'm combining both and teaching PGRs/ ECAs how to engage with the public. Such a treat to be doing it in the @uofglasgow.bsky.social ARC
Photo shows a presentation displayed on a large screen in a classroom. The slide has science themed icons in the background and reads 'Why engage?'
