SO excited for this. A blast from the #literacies past.

You will not want to be miss the October chat, where we will be celebrating HOMECOMING with #literacies chat founders Dr. Anna Smith (@anna-phd.bsky.social) and Dr. Emily Pendergrass (@esp-phd.bsky.social)

I think @drannd.bsky.social's work is such an example and reminder of how important it is for #literacies scholars working in higher ed settings to stand in solidarity with teachers who are living the risks and realities of censorship all day, every day.

I've not yet met a teacher who testifies in favor of the legislation that restricts books in classrooms. #literacies

I would be interested to explore how children themselves respond to censorship! There was a lot of youth backlash to the recent UK online safety act rollout because some young people saw it as censorship. This has been a challenging tension for me, as I also value online safety for youth!

Yes! Makes me think not only about censorship of content, but censorship of modality, and the ways that arts-based forms of literacy or play-based literacies are often delegitimized in institutional spaces.

Q6: Ultimately this climate of fear continues to deprofessionalize teachers, which is especially scary in the age of AI, in which digital tools and platforms, uncritically adopted, run the risk of further eroding teachers' creative and professional decision-making power #literacies
clarabbott.bsky.social
The irony is that this framing of curriculum as a family's "choice" often works at the expense of children's choices, choices in what they read, agree with, how they play, what ideas they engage with
clarabbott.bsky.social
Q4: As I study children's agency as a major part of my research, I think censorship is a major way we take away children's choice, positioning them as passive, rather than critical thinkers who can question the ideas they encounter. Censorship is a way of delegitimizing children's #literacies.

It is so powerful what happens when teachers, school staff and families stand together to fight censorship. A group of teachers in my previous setting was advocating for queer-inclusive sex/relationships education in the school and many parents and staff members stood in solidarity with us!

Q3: I continually look to @aaup.org as an organization which has fought tirelessly for scholarly freedom of speech, including standing by scholar activists, in an era in which many forms of speech are under attack in higher education (at many levels!). #literacies

It's so heartbreaking not only for queer youth, but also for children with queer family members, friends, and other loved ones.

There's also so much self-censorship that can be internalized by hearing the ways colleagues have been disciplined or punished for speaking about subject matter or teaching particular texts. Lots of deterrence often at work!
clarabbott.bsky.social
Ah, we had similar answers! Thinking about the many micro moments of self censorship that go beyond what texts we teach or curricular moves we make, can be the smallest comment or interaction, a constant negotiation.
clarabbott.bsky.social
Really interesting how humanizing a text, or one's self as a teacher, can sometimes be a form of resistance against censorship - I have had really similar experiences after speaking with parents in person or on the phone at times!

A2: As a queer teacher in an elementary school (even one which was more progressive!), I often felt I had to self-censor often - this was because of the broader censorship of queer experiences, texts, and subject matter, especially as they are deemed 'inappropriate' for children. #literacies

@lexikwoodward.bsky.social really interested in the idea of self-censorship, especially in terms of where such messages are internalized from! Really would love to explore this more in schooling contexts because teachers are at such high risk for even the smallest things they might say
clarabbott.bsky.social
@ncte.org is really an organization I look towards when thinking through issues of censorship – thank you for your leadership there!
clarabbott.bsky.social
A1: I'm really inspired by Nancy Fraser's idea of participatory parity when thinking about censorship, that censorship could be overt, but it could also result from larger patterns of inequality that silences marginalized voices or contributions in a space or conversation #literacies

The AI and Education discourse is maddening. "Does AI improve learning?" is a dumb question. What form of "AI" and in what context? What do you mean by learning? Improving on a test or knowledge for use?
If you're asking that question, you don't actually care about a real answer.

@snowdaylearninglab.org I love the way you frame that! The fun is very much palpable listening to you all. Inspired by this and hope other scholars continue to follow suit in producing scholarship in alternative modalities!
