Please reach out any time with questions! Or if you experience censorship, I can connect you to folks at various orgs who offer support and guidance. We're in this together and keeping diverse books in kids' hands and in teachers' classrooms is essential work. #literacies

Thanks to those who joined! I'll be working through my replies and mentions over the next few days to continue the conversation. I'll plug an amazing volume of research on censorship that you can get now, and vol 2 focuses on teacher voices and is coming out in November (before NCTE). #literacies

I think @drannd.bsky.social's work is such an example and reminder of how important it is for #literacies scholars working in higher ed settings to stand in solidarity with teachers who are living the risks and realities of censorship all day, every day.

This fear is so real. And that's the point of the climate of fear created by the various ideologues who seek to silence stories and rewrite history. There's great power in looking to Freedom Schools or Indigenous peoples fostering literacy during colonization. I love this project. #literacies

A6 1/3: I have not really talked about censorship’s larger impacts! I have mainly focused on emphasizing the importance for students to see their stories (and stories of others unlike them) in books. It can be life-saving.

Thank you for sharing! This makes me deeply consider the ways I can (and should!) use my power as a University student to step up and speak in solidarity with teachers in such vulnerable positions! #literacies

Thank you for joining!! I'm a public ed teacher too. It's funny that I stand by the things I write here, but I'm always aware that I need to be careful of what I write. It's a confusing balance.

Thank you for this! My dept is currently amazing. However, in a small town, parents often turn to social media & direct complaints to admin before speaking to the teachers or board. #literacies W/ recent events, complaints about text/topics in class have come up, even with approved texts.

A5: I've never done this b4 so hopefully not stepping on toes. As a public ed teacher, I was excited to see this topic addressed, yet for this topical reason, I was afraid to chime in because of what someone might do if they see my posts then try to target my job/district/curriculum. #literacies

I would be interested to explore how children themselves respond to censorship! There was a lot of youth backlash to the recent UK online safety act rollout because some young people saw it as censorship. This has been a challenging tension for me, as I also value online safety for youth!

Totally fair! It is so real. And not at all stepping on toes. Hopefully you have allies in your department and community who have your back. Parents who will speak at the school board before there's an issue. Maybe you can quietly share this toolkit with them. #literacies

In one instance, administrators at a local high school required that English teachers use only the district approved textbook. Beyond that, they’re not permitted to bring in stand alone works of fiction or allow for student choice reading.

Yes! Makes me think not only about censorship of content, but censorship of modality, and the ways that arts-based forms of literacy or play-based literacies are often delegitimized in institutional spaces.

If you censor all the books, the only texts that can be taught are the ones from centralized sources.

School Moms, by Pappano, looks at the Christian Nationalist goal of taking over school board and, eventually, public schools. Michael Apple has been writing about the Right's desire to delegitimize public schools for decades. It is part of the larger neoliberal marketification of ed. #literacies

So true. The goal is removal of agency! We actually don't know much about the impacts of these restrictions on young people. Enough of that research hasn't been published (yet). #literacies
