Reading this felt even more shocking having worked on migrant workers rights because
a) states are notoriously lax on finding + convicting abuses
b) few migrant workers can speak out let alone get convictions due to risk of retaliation or exportation

So this millions is the tip of a *huge* iceberg

If I recommend reading one thing today it's this...

An amazing group of journalists have spent a year tracking the millions in CAP subsidies going to farmers who are being investigated, have been convicted, or are even in prison for violating migrant workers' rights

think that realistically I would have always been deeply, deeply worried about the rise of far-right ideas in public discourse but I truly never expected this level of blithe elite complacency, turns out I do feel worried but mostly I feel like I'm going insane, watching them do.......nothing at all

Myself I feel powerless to stop this fascist rise precisely because it feels like all our institutions are just rolling over to it.

also engenders a dangerous complacency where the mass civil society response that is required to actually push back on this stuff doesn‘t happen because people convince themselves “it won’t happen so why should they have to put their heads above water on it“

The attempt "to initiate a criminal investigation against politicians on a completely flimsy basis is aggressive Trumpian politics

“For the largest political group in the EP to be implicated when democracy is under attack from far right is scandalous and irresponsible" @olivierhoedeman.bsky.social

Calls on top prosecutors to investigate Frans Timmermans were widely covered in July, in escalation of NGO funding debate

What wasn't covered: that the group behind them has close ties to the EPP and "coordinated" with a far-right MEP, who denies climate science

Day Two of Reform conference, and we're getting the good stuff. At the Heartland Institute's fringe "Is Climate Realism Inevitable", we've learned that electric cars are part of a Marxist plot to control humanity, and heard calls for the abolition of the BBC.

And residents @sarasneath.bsky.social and I spoke to were angry and scared about the risks of pollution

“All around, my community’s going to suffer from the air pollution,” one resident, Melanie Shafer, told me. “I’ve lived here my whole life, and watching it turn to a wasteland is so sad"
