The 9th begins another round of bills, most especially my phone. I probably should've posted this on Friday, as to it cut or so close but posting these is not only such an interruption to my normal function on here, and I have to gear up to doing it each time...

What a thrill to finally share my piece on two of my favorite games: Snake Eater & Guns of the Patriots. I interrogate how Kojima shows us cyclical violent worlds but still attempts to guide us toward non-violence (in sometimes questionable ways).

"It’s a work that positions the West as a place of damnation, testing even the most virtuous among us in ways that either break us down or strengthen our resolve...That Crowley packages these ideas in such a bleak, bloody curiosity as this is something to celebrate."

Color me impressed by the bleak, horror-coded weirdness of Ned Crowley's low-budget supernatural Western KILLING FAITH -- which feels like the closest thing we'll get to a Blood Meridian movie, at least in spirit, for some time.

Killing Faith movie review & film summary (2025) | Roger Ebert
Its minor sins are easy to forgive for such a bold, idiosyncratic anti-Western as this, the kind we don't often get.

Still kicking myself a bit for flaking on horror titles for the other two, but I got lazy.

ALL THE DEVILS ARE HERE gives us a Cockney cottagecore RESERVOIR DOGS with solid turns from British geezers, until a last act that piles one guffaw-worthy twist on another and collapses under its own philosophical weight.

All the Devils Are Here movie review (2025) | Roger Ebert
All this style is in service of a fairly formulaic story about volatile men going crazy at the edge of nowhere.

Netflix gets into the boozy SUCCESSION business with HOUSE OF GUINNESS, a show where the sex and revolution and palace intrigue flow as recklessly as a generous draught from a tipsy bartender. (Beware, more beer puns ahoy.)
