Time for a proper intro post?

Hey all 👋! I'm a full-stack dev responsible for an open-source ecosystem of gamified web applications here at UCF 🎮. I also mentor a cohort of junior student devs as part of our in-house "Techrangers" program. I do everything from accessibility to front-end to devops.
The human mind is not built to handle maintaining dependabot pull requests on 40+ github repositories

We did our first EV "road trip" this weekend: ~240 miles each way. Two random observations: 1: supercharger congestion is nuts! Stopped to charge 3x, and all 3 stops had packed superchargers. By contrast, CCS chargers always had room. 2: every CCS network has their own app. Annoying! I'm up to 7.

Unreasonably bummed to learn that the zoo in Miami decommissioned and scrapped its monorail in 2022. I had fond memories of riding it as a kid! 1990s me was convinced monorails were the transit option of the future.

Hopped... sparkling water? This was a new experience, but a delightful one.

Two weeks ago I made the plunge on a gently used EV. Now I'm that guy who won't shut up about how awesome EVs are (sorry.) Especially coming from a series of manual transmission cars, it truly feels like driving a spaceship.

End of an era. I really think this is for the best, despite having many wonderful memories of visiting as a kid 20+ years ago.

Still thinking about this cozy beer garden in southwestern Maine from last weekend. Pizza, beer, 70 degrees, 45% humidity. Just incredible.

Hi. I don't have anything of substance to add to the current discourse, so here's a loon on a lake.

I've used twitter via the web app on firefox mobile since they shut down 3rd party apps prior to elonification. Since then, it is shocking how much power it drains even just scrolling the timeline for several minutes. At some point I need to plug in dev tools and investigate.

Pleased to snag a signed copy of Al Reynolds's new novella. This is now my second signed book by one of my favorite authors.

I held off playing BG3 for a while because I was skeptical it was THAT good, but after having just finished my first run... Okay, yeah, it was indeed THAT good.

Among all the big bad things happening on our planet, there's one Big Good Thing, the sudden, startling rise of solar energy.
It changes the power dynamic, in every sense of the word 'power.'

4.6 Billion Years On, the Sun Is Having a Moment
In the past two years, without much notice, solar power has begun to truly transform the world’s energy system.

It's a great time to fuck off from work, log off online, and take care of yourself and the people you love.

We all need to gear up for what's coming.

I don't have the words to convey how absolutely devastating this would be. I look forward to preparing for storms based purely on vibes and YouTube weather slop.
It's hard to adequately summarize how destructive NOAA's 2026 proposed budget released on Monday is for hurricane forecasting, but I crammed all I could into today's newsletter. I encourage everyone with interests along the coast to read it carefully. ⬇️
NOAA Proposes Permanently Closing Premiere Hurricane Research Institute
In its proposed 2026 budget released Monday, NOAA closes all federally funded weather and climate research labs, including the one responsible for maintaining the nation’s top hurricane models

From one of the local protests in Casselberry this morning. Overheard organizers estimate about 2000 in attendance, by far their largest turnout yet.

There are 2 previous historical cases of countries destroying their science and universities, crippling them for decades: Lysenkoism in the USSR and Nazi Germany. The Trump administration will be the 3rd.
It's not just budgets but research, institutions, expertise, and training the next generation.

Visited a wholesome little aquarium in southern Rhode Island today and now considering what it might take to move from edtech to museums, aquariums, or similar public-facing scicomm orgs 🤔

Anecdotal: On occasions where I still visit the other site, it's through the web app on mobile safari with ublock origin. Doing so incurs a massive drain on battery performance, in a way I can only assume the native android or iOS apps avoid. Suppose that's the price paid for modest privacy.

Sometimes I think about resubbing to @washingtonpost.com but then they put out utterly humiliating garbage like this, an absolutely embarrassing double standard, and I only wish I could cancel my sub again and again and again

Today I learned some of the most formative influences on my childhood - MSB, Reading Rainbow, Bill Nye - were all due to NSF funding.
I was today years old when I learned that the Magic Schoolbus was an NSF-funded project.
