I think the question is whether Paxton is more appealing to Texas GOP voters than Ted Cruz. I've lived here nearly 40 years and interact with these people daily and I have no idea what the answer to that question is.

I think it's a mix of this and, somewhat paradoxically (and as Jamelle noted in another post), anxiety over status competition. The Simon Bazelons of the world want fewer people competing for the positions they feel entitled to and think most of their competition are beneath them

I think Crockett gets boatraced by Cornyn and loses by a pretty wide margin to Paxton. Talarico probably loses by a fairly wide margin to Cornyn, but might have a slim shot against Paxton (especially if the GOP's popularity continues to nosedive next year).
