If you're wondering why these big companies would knowingly fund a doomed economic bubble like this, it's because capitalism is a zero-sum game: whoever survives the inevitable crash gets to consolidate the remnants of the old economy. This has happened at least 3 times in just my lifetime.

"The hundreds of billions of dollars companies are investing in AI now account for an astonishing 40 per cent share of US GDP growth this year... In a way, then, America has become one big bet on AI."
America is now one big bet on AI
It’s seen as the magic fix for every threat to the US economy

Hellraiser is another one I need to binge someday. If only for cultural literacy.

The truth is I'd rather have the TIME to watch 12 films than the money to buy them. I still haven't watched the Terminator series, the Fly series, or the Star Trek series since I bought the box sets over the last 3 years.

I have only seen one Friday the 13th movie (the very first one), didn't like it, and yet I came SO CLOSE to buying this box-set yesterday. It's going out of print so even if I didn't wind up liking the series I could still make my money back by re-selling it.

One more BA-thesis-masquerading-as-a-YouTube-video should fix things, though.

For sure. What really pierced the veil for me was when my own alma mater—which gave me a graduate degree with honors—rejected my grad school application. What in the world did they think they were preparing me for???

Still thinking about that professor at my college graduation party who raised a glass of champagne and shouted "Good luck getting jobs!"

"Grade school" isn't an insult, either. My public education (grades 1-12) was WAY cooler than my college education—which feels, in hindsight, more like a rent-seeking scheme than anything else. I was actually taught by more PhDs in high school than in college.

Getting real contemplative in the run-up to the 13th anniversary of my joining the workforce, in a field that has nothing to do with my formal education. I'll have spent one year longer in an unchosen field than I spent in all of grade-school.

I'm the guy who was surprised to find it in the @movieoubliette.bsky.social, because even though it was considered a box-office disappointment, it DID earn 3x what it cost to make at the box office, and almost everyone these days has at least HEARD of it.

Tron is really hard on first watch. Hard to tell what the stakes are or the goal is from scene to scene. But on *SECOND* watch, most of it is pretty clear. Despite a wildly anticlimactic ending, I think it's a fun little adventure film, on top of a game-changing effects reel.

I recorded a 15-page script this weekend—my first recording session in about 8 months. I felt super-rusty (had to record in two sessions across multiple days because my voice started to go after just 20 mins), but it feels good to be recording *anything* these days.

The one level of film production that could be gutted and replaced by automation without anyone noticing is the executive suite

Can we just, like... speedrun thru every permutation of this bullshit publicity-stunt and just skip to the part where everyone shuns these things on sight? AI news anchors. AI sports-matchups. AI presidential candidates. AI reality TV shows. AI zoos. Ok? We done?

The language of non-consent around AI is really telling. "It's too late to be scared." "It's here whether we want it or not." "You'll have to learn to work with it." "You can't fight the inevitable."

All just variations of "you're not allowed to say no." Creepy technology made by creepy people.

You should be able to call off if you've had "Deepest Bluest (Shark's Fin)" stuck in your head for days.

Make art that you think is fuckin sick as hell. Make the shit you never thought you could that you always wanted to see. Beat your insecurity to death and fight to become your own favorite artist.
