I feel like this photo of masked, armed men pepper spraying a pastor protecting his community is going to be a defining picture of this moment in America for a long, long time.

The scenes out of Chicago should outrage us all. These federal agents are out of control, committing senseless acts of violence & putting everyone at risk.

American citizens are being detained & brutalized.

This kind of immigration "enforcement" shouldn't be acceptable to anyone.
Immigration agents become increasingly aggressive in Chicago

This has nothing to do with crime. This is an attempt to crush political dissent.

Never before, in our entire 250 year history, has the military or immigration agents been used like this. It's dystopian, illegal, and it should stop.

Just here to pile on about this 1992 photo. Whoever was involved shouldn't be, ever again.

And the southwestern corner of PA? I mean, that's *literally* the cultural hearth of the Greater Appalachian regional culture. Its about as Midwestern as Savannah.
colinwoodard.bsky.social
I really don't see Pittsburgh or Chautauqua as "Midwestern" places in any case.

In historical -- not cultural -- terms, MO wasn't part of the old Northwest Territory and, indeed, was a slave state that became part of the Confederacy. PA and NY weren't part of the Old Northwest Territory either, and were settled well before parts Westward and governed by Eastern capitals.

It’s not “the fight against Hamas” that’s isolated Israel, it’s the intentional mass slaughter and starvation of tens of thousands of civilians.

Israel is emerging from the Gaza war as the regional hegemon but the country’s fight against Hamas also has left it increasingly politically isolated.
After Two Years of War, Israel Is Stronger—and More Isolated—Than Ever
The war in Gaza has spurred a global backlash that threatens Israel’s long-term prospects.

Dunno man, seems a little misleading to write an article about Trump describing activity in Portland and Chicago as “insurrection” with a 33 year old photo of a burning donut shop taken in the 1992 LA Riots (sans caption explaining that) as the header on all your posts about it.
The picture from
The article with a picture of an armed men standing in front of a burning donut shop. You must click through to read the caption “
Two National guardsmen stand guard outside a burning donut shop in Los Angeles on April 30, 1992.
The National Guard was called in to aid police during the second day of rioting in the city.”

3. So, in historical terms, MO, and western PA and NY are probably out, though culturally they all have ties to the Appalachian, Midland, and Yankee midwest.

2. The Midwest is ultimately a shared *historical* (rather than cultural) experience: that of free states carved out of the federal NW Territory that had arable farmland and were, in their formative period, treated as "frontier" appendages of the various regional metropoles on the East Coast.

1. I argue that, in #AmericanNations (First Effective Settlement) terms, the "Midwest" is really the western portions of 3-4 culture regions. But if you must create one, this isn't terrible.

In my time as an investigative journalist, there were many times where nefarious actors/orgs had hidden their past connections, personnel, positions, or history. But because @archive.org exists, I was able to uncover the facts, bearing receipts from archived versions of their own web pages.

Weaponized gratitude is a key tool in the abuser's toolkit. The goal is to convince the victim that they owe the abuser so much, they should feel guilty for wanting to complain.
Tweet from the VP:
Joy Reid has had such a good life in this country. It's been
overwhelmingly kind and gracious to her. She is far wealthier than most.
Yet she oozes with contempt.
My honest, non-trolling advice to Joy Reid is that you'd be a much
happier person if you showed a little gratitude
