Another variant acquired!

Was able to hit three more shops today around Richmond but the only thing I picked up was Nova: Centurion #3 with the Clayton Crain cover.

Definitely gonna hit Stories Comics again next time I’m in town and just stay there to really dig thru the long boxes thoroughly.

62 of the 80 issues in the run!

That’s about half there in my hand with an Issue 2 on top. What a huge win for my #1 collecting goal of 2026. Suddenly Nexus isn’t feeling like a multi-year project!

Bonus #Nova50thAnniversary content, as Nova: Centurion #3 is out today in stores!

You can even try to snag yourself a 90’s era look for Rich on this cool Marvel Cosmic Invasion variant cover!

I hit the Nexus motherload!

If you’re ever in Richmond VA, stop in Stories Comics on W Broad St. This unassuming exterior belies the massive backstock of vintage issues and numerous bookshelves stocked with new and old collected editions available inside. Super helpful staff too!

“Another few rounds like that, and it won’t only be my costume that’s black and blue!”

Controversy! The very next issue Nova refers to his costume as both black AND blue! So who’s telling the truth? And who needs to get their eyes checked? Is it Richard Rider or Mike Burley?

“Tha’s fine, then. I’m pure hell on lawbreakers.”

Is there something about motorcycles that just brings out the best in artists? I swear some of the most jaw-dropping, eye-popping, comic book pages tend to involve a hot rod. And in this case, a literal “hot” rod drawn by Flint Henry.

I was the same, I never bought an issue new either. I bought Issue #1 from a $1 bin in the 90s in case it might be worth something someday. That started my habit of grabbing random Grimjack comics from discount bins without ever reading them. 2022 is when I got serious about finishing the series.

In the interview, Nova : Centurion (and X-Men) writer @jedmackay.bsky.social mention he’s a fan of the Pérez & Loveness Nova series. What was your favorite part of that run Jed? What did you *love*? 😉

(I’m ignoring Jed’s mention of Namorita later in the interview)

Plus it’s funny that Marv Wolfman was building up the Sphinx as the one who must not be named decades before Voldemort

“Look! The guy in black’s being creamed!”

In case you were ever wondering, Nova‘s original costume was black not blue, just like Spider-Man’s! It’s true, you can trust high school bully Mike Burley to know his color wheel. #Nova50thAnniversary

“The poor lived elsewhere.”

I suppose any sort of dark dystopian future can be compared to Blade Runner. But when I got to this Grimjack page, with the rain and the slow zoom in those bottom three panels – I couldn’t help but think of the gorgeous cinematography from that film.

Something I never keyed on before, and it will be interesting to see how quickly it’s dropped, is that Issue #1 shows Rich gets a quite a bit smarter thanks to the Nova force. Or at least have access to impressive calculating skills when prompted.

“He’s new! Get a picture!”

Artist extraordinaire Alex Ross paints our favorite human rocket on two pages of Marvels: Epilogue as he and writer Kurt Busiek gave us a new look at Richard Rider early in his career as Nova.

“If I’m not who I thought I was, who can I be? If I can’t trust my memory, what can I trust?”

John Gaunt or Jim Twilley – the question of this new-look Grimjack’s identity is finally resolved in Issue #62, part three of a three part storyline.

And introducing new artist Steve Epting

WHISPER just moved up my back issue Want List with this announcement. I liked the character since my intro to her in First Adventures, and then even more intrigued after the Crossroads event. Epting, one of my favorite Avenger artists, makes it a lock.

Who's your favorite Superhero (even if it is Batman or Spider-Man)?

✨ Nova ✨

I’m guessing this is when the latest iteration of the Nova Corps died? Surprised they weren’t taken to power the faith engines.

Infinity Countdown and the follow up Cates/Shaw Guardians of the Galaxy is a confusing time period for me, as I collected these from back issues rather than reading new.

“Oh, come on, boys. Don’t act like you aren’t impressed.”

This version of Phyla Vell had a phenomenal look and Geoff Shaw nails it. Pair that with Donny Cates writing the character with confidence, and you’ve got Phyla taking out Proxima Midnight all by herself. Awesome moment. #MarvelCosmic

”Hey ugly – here’s Nova in your eye!”

I had to laugh when I saw this exchange. Took me right back to the conversation about Nova needing a different catchphrase.

Don’t do this to me! 😆
I’ve already got the Frank Miller one hanging on my wall. A Matt Wagner Lone Wolf and Cub poster would be too hard to resist.

Splash Page Sunday!

Richard Rider’s first full page panel came in Nova #2 Page 1 where he is tucked away in the back there, zooming toward the bank window with four armed crooks inside robbing it. The Buscema-Sinnott art on the bad guy in the foreground is outstanding.

Not a virgin variant cover!

I guess the editors at First Comics decided the art by Flint Henry for Issue 61 was simply too gorgeous to apply any trade dress over it. Including the two previous looks of Grimjack was smart for anyone perusing the newsstands who might not recognize his new features.
January 4, 2026 at 2:25 PM
First they had Frank Miller, then Bill Sienkiewicz for year two, now (back in 1989) we see with Issue 25 that Matt Wagner will be taking over art chores for Lone Wolf and Cub covers.

Got to love the quality and variety First Comics was pulling in for this Japanese reprint series.

Oh I quite liked Geiger V.2

I enjoyed the heck out of Gary Frank art in the first trade paperback but the story didn’t grab me. I thought it was fine, just not something I’d keep reading. But after recently picking up Junkyard Joe and Redcoat, I decided to revisit Geiger. And boy I’m glad I did.

No wraparound cover image for Issue 2, but we still got JLGL on the front, drawing Batman and the Flash this time. And on the back, an Andy Kubert Viking Prince to compliment his father’s art inside this comic on the same character.
