Our future could be one of self-destruction or sustainable growth. It could be one of isolation or exploring and settling elsewhere.

We have choices to make collectively, but we lose our power when we allow systems of wealth inequality to control our civilization.

Trying something new this week at The Cosmobiologist. A little smattering from my writing notes over the last few months.

Off to the New Zealand Air Force Museum where Hari Mogoșanu will interview 6-time space mission veteran, Michael López-Alegría.

This is the cover of the 1977 issue of Newsweek where Sharon Bagley wrote "Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known" at the end of an article that included quotes from Carl Sagan.

It's a fantastical quote, but one that often is misattributed to Sagan himself.

Maybe the ants have been trying to communicate with us and we just haven't noticed. Or, maybe they think whatever we are isn't trying to communicate with them 😂

As a scientist who speaks with students often about careers in the sciences and engineering, I can say wholeheartedly that, while it is crucial to develop our skills in mathematics and realms of the sciences, we need the beauty and depth of the experience and imagination to make it all worthwhile.

Sometimes taking a moment to feel the wonder and awe of living and experiencing this universe is enough to remind us of why we carry on, why we should care for each other, and why we can’t let gloom and the wishes of narcissistic people overcome the light within us.

Off to the observatory! I drove on the right-hand side of a car for the first time tonight (well, I pulled a vehicle forward and then backed it up again, but close…). Radio New Zealand in the morning and then helping Hari Mogoșanu put together her weight rack (fitness on the way 💪).

Epic! Wish I could tune in, but I'll be at an Aerospace Summit in New Zealand at that time :)

Astrobiologists and researchers on topics related to life in the universe: can’t give a lot away yet, but big teaser here:

Something is in the works for 2027 in New Zealand that will be awesome. Will try to help get it on your radar as soon as I can.

After a cancelled flight from Auckland last night, we’re finally off this morning for Christchurch. Will land and go straight to the venue for sharing space science with an audience at the Air Force Museum of New Zealand!

Kind of hard to only do the small talk thing, really.

Will AI look back at us as the ancestors that were and are no more?

I certainly hope not. And I honestly don’t think so.

I think what we’re truly approaching is not a replacement or deletion of what we were, but a next evolution. A new step in what it means to be human.

Oh, maybe. I write a boatload for my newsletter (over 130,000 words in the past year just for that), but have been slower moving on book writing than I'd like.

I like being here on BlueSky, but I do wonder if this is trying too hard to be the old Twitter.

For instance, I like writing and reading longer posts. I want to engage with real people and learn real things and have civil arguments. Short posts don't do that.

Meet the Scientists is a video series for sharing big ideas in science created by Jessica Xhumari, Omar Wanis, and Ryan Kirby (who all work with me as Visiting Scholars at BMSIS). I'm super proud of all three of them for their work!
